Arizona Chickens

Good Morning Arizona,
The weather is fantastic and everyone is laying....except the EE's.

My ducks are even giving me an egg a day. They don't appear interested in setting the eggs, though. I wonder if that will change in the spring.

I'm a little concerned about one of my chicks. She's only about a week old, but one of her wings feathers aren't laying flat? She acts fine. She's friendly and keeps up with the others great. She's already my favorite and I don't know if this is something that corrects itself or might need intervention.

Any ideas?

Have you all read up on dogs "getting high" from licking the toads?? When my niece was living with us, her dog would go out at night looking for the toads and lick them until she was high as a kite!! No lie!! She was addicted. She would get frantic at the door every night to go out and find her fix! There is a story archived on NPR website that tells a similar story. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6376594
But
, yes, can be very dangerous if the dog bites them.

This is the waterer we use. Aside from needing to be scrubbed every couple of weeks, it is absolutely no fuss. It stays clean and cool, even in the summer. Nothing can get in it. It cost about $40 at a local feed store. We have a water line to the garden which isn't too far from the coop, so my husband tied into that to provide a water line to the chicken waterer. Now that it is done. What a nice feature in the coop!!

I have not been on BYC for a while. So, hello all!! Miss the discussions!

mahalo4 - Thanks for the response and the welcome.

I was looking at her wing a little closer and when I tuck the longer feathers underneath the shorter feathers her wing looks okay...but when she flaps her wings again they pop back out. That makes me think this is more about her feathers than her actual wing being tweaked?

Anyone else have any thoughts about that? Should I just leave it alone? She's an awesome chick, the most curious of humans of the bunch.

Well, hubby is out of quarantine! So far no one else is showing any symptoms, but I;m not counting my chickens before they hatch! LOL!!!

I am hoping we dodged a big one.

As far as chickens go... I just got the okay from my DH to order my Welsummer pullets!

I thought I was going to have to wait until Spring. So, to make sure they had plenty of warm buddies I also ordered Delawares, Brown Leghorns and SLWs!

They will be shipping out November 2nd!

Thank you for posting this. I have thought about going this direction, but I used a hose and the water in the hose was hot ... and even if it wasn't, my water pipes must run through the cieling (yes, a novel concept for a former Utah girl) and water is hot in the summer even coming from the tap...so it seemed like the water would always be hot in this type of waterer at my house. Still wondering about it though. If I have to go out of town it would be nice to have a more automated system so I would worry less about someone else taking as good care of them as I do!

Good Afternoon everyone. I had to make a trip into the city today. :rantChickens out of food, Dogs out of food, cat out of food and Mama out of food. I was so shocked when I went to the feed store. The compressed bales of pine shavings were not there. They had 2 different kinds, that were not compressed:mad: and the price went from $6.00 & $7.00 a bale for compressed, to $8.00 & $9.00 for loose and in cubic feet. There are 2 more feed stores about the same distance drive. I will check them out. You get so much more with the compressed bale. I could hardly lift them. The new ones I could carry by a corner of the bag, in one hand. Something wrong with this picture!

Strange dog:idunno I love that waterer you have. I like that the chickens can't roost on top of it. Where did you get it? Can you order them? I have never seen one like that before. I have a large and a small self water plastic pans. I quite using it, as the water is so hot, laying in the hose as well as how hot the water is coming out of the ground. It is hot enough to wash dishes and shower. I turn off my water heater in the summer. I just turned it back on this past week.

I've had my head buried in the quail section lately so it has taken me awhile to venture to the other sections...and usually I just get sucked into the recipes section yum!

We ran the line under the ground which keeps the water in the line cool. That was the hard part, but as I said, once it is done, we don't have to worry about it anymore.
