Arizona Chickens

Silkies layed their first egg today (not sure which one though, seeing as there are two who have both been exhibiting behavior common to pullets on the onset of lay((maybe they both layed it

nurseshelly-- So sorry about the sick kid! There isn't much worse than the pukage. I got to spend quite a bit of time in the doctor's office with my athsmatic kid today. As scary as it is, I still handle it a lot better than puking.

Pastrymama-- I feel your pain! I took 3 of our 8 9 week old chicks back to the feed store today because they were boys. One was crowing already, too. He was going to be a beautiful rooster, but I just can't handle more than one rooster. I couldn't get the kids away from them all day. They were so sad that it was the last time they would see Kitty Cat, Alyssa, and Prejudice again. It's frustrating and sad! They did trade me a buff orphington and 2 silver laced wyandottes that are about 5 weeks old, so at least that helped a little to ease the sting. I sure hope they stay girls!

Laree--You are right. You DO have issues!

Mahalo-- Congrats on the coop completion! I would love to see pictures. I don't know if it is a fluke or what, but the bunny is so crazy happy with our bantam hens. He gets so excited to come get a little scratch on the chin when we go out to see him. He seems to have a lot of fun rearranging the straw. If we get another bunny, we may need a hutch, but this works for us for now. My husband is supposed to be building our 3rd coop any day. I need to show him yours so he can copy them! (if'n you don't mind, of course)

Here's a weird question: why are my hens picking up straw and putting it on their backs when they are on the nest? Even after about 2 years with chickens, there is so little I know. They are such mysterious little critters.

The laying hens are my old ones (Welp). But I got some new chicks a couple of weeks ago (Sandhill). Blue Andalusians, Black Ameraucanas, more Anconas, Buff Minorcas and BB red Cubalayas. I am especially curious how the cubies are going to do

Next chicks/eggs I get will be fom a breeder. Now that I know how "serious" I am about this chicken thing

I'm only going to commit to a lemon and a mandarin orange, citrus-wise. My parents have 100-something trees, about half of which are oranges so I can get my fill of that there. No one I know has mandarin and the only lemon tree I know of that I have access to is really old and started dying this year. I have an asian pear, peach and plum already. And that female mulberry I still haven't thought of a home for yet. I need to soon... it's almost 2 years old and in the same pot.

Figs! Yummy 2 crops a year mondo shade producing FIGS! If you don't like them you can sell the crop.

I love fig trees, but the husband HATES them. WHY? The chickens would eat any and all droppage!

I bought one anyway. *shhhhhh* it's in the garden.

My husband saw a PBS special on the life of a fig tree...and refuses to eat them now. There is this insect, the Fig Wasp, pollinates the fig flowers, then if I remember correctly, there is a nematode that lives inside the fig.. Anyway he doesn't want to be eating nematodes.

"However, there are several commercial and ornamental varieties of fig that are self-fertile and do not require pollination; these varieties are not visited by fig wasps." From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fig_wasp

I
wish I could grow ANYTHING! I can't even grow tumbleweeds out here!

I thought nematodes are a great source for protein!
