Arizona Chickens

Maybe..but she was walking around my yard, not flying. She tried to run away when I caught her. I got the distinct impression she had been a caged bird for quite a while.

To my knowledge, none of the racing/tumbling/rolling pigeon breeds have feathered feet, so my guess is it's an escapee or abandoned pet. The pigeon and dove section here on BYC has some smart people that could help with any questions.

Meg,
I had the same situation! Nothing but a black swarm of beetles for about 8 weeks or so. I came to the same conculsion and thought they were sterile. Then I discovered a few tiny worms and now a week later every time I pick up some food there are tons of worms on it. Some are now almost an inch. It's like worms are exploding in my tub.
Give it another week or two. Hopefully you are at the same stage!

(I started with 2000 in late march/early April)

Hope strikes again!

Are the beetles getting a source of moisture? I've read they'll eat their eggs if they get too hungry or thirsty. I've had success by placing a piece of paper towel in the bin, as the females prefer to lay eggs on it, and replacing it with a fresh one weekly. The paper towels then go to a "nursery" bin, and yes - explosion!

The Pet Food Depot on Cave Creek and Grovers has Layena for 14.99 a bag and .50 off if you buy 10 bags.

Feed Barn is out of Egg Maker pellets...glad I called before I headed north.

Wish Western Ranchman would carry some quality feed... even their fee from New Mexico has ash in it.

I'm having an Aloha Chicken baby boom over here! It is awesome!

Larissa and I and another gal that I gave eggs to, had not so wonderful hatches there for a bit, Laree thought it was probably the low humidity. Well, apparently, we are all better now:

I put potato halves in there for moisture, and last night (what a coincidence) I put some brown paper in so I could see if anyone would lay eggs on it and I could put the eggs in the new habitat.

Here are photos of my older, one month old babies.

FYI - I need to cull about five, I think, that are showing too much white or too much black. Would anyone like them? Free if you can get here tomorrow morning to pick them up. 67th Ave and I-10. Perfect opportunity for someone who can't keep roos, because these are culls, so you are welcome to eat the roos and keep the hens as sterile egg-making pets. (If you want to become a breeder of these, let me know, and I will set you up with better quality chicks. These culls are just that - culls. Wrong colors.)

I will be leaving tomorrow to go out of town for the weekend. My boyfriend will be here this weekend, but he can't pick out the ones I want to re-home.

Here are photos of a few of my favorite "keepers":

Can they be sexed yet? I'm trying to get rid of 5 5 week old roos already, but could use a pullet or 2 to keep my only W/BW Americauna chick company. I can pick up fairly early.
