Arizona Chickens

LareePQG and Mahonri, Fantastic brooder!

mclevinson, It is important to maintain a relatively constant source of vegetables for the beetles (not quite as important for the larvae). Egg cannibalism by adults is extremely low (even lower than larval cannibalism on pupae), but egg production is highly determined by availability of vegetable matter and the moisture contained within. Because of the lowered output under a poor feeding regime, a lot of hobbyists attribute that lower production to cannibalism. I suspect that you will notice tons of larvae very soon.

Smiles-N-Sunshine, I hope you're not in the path of the Monument fire! I've been reading about it but haven't yet seen a map of where it's headed.

alohachickens, Sooo cute!

The beetles will have their feed increased by an apple core every couple days or when the last one starts to dry up. They are very active. I also have chick crumbles in there, which they love. Thank you all for your distinctions!

One W/BW Americauna hatched at 8 AM. (Just in time for the birthday girl to see! Yea Sarah, 7 years old today!) Not the most vigorous chick for all her haste to hatch. Wasn't actually looking for anything to start hatching until this afternoon so we'll just see, huh?

Can they be sexed yet? I'm trying to get rid of 5 5 week old roos already, but could use a pullet or 2 to keep my only W/BW Americauna chick company. I can pick up fairly early./quote

I don't know if they can or not, but I'm trying to get rid of the whole group at once - not just the hens. If you'd like them all let me know!

Thanks Gallo, as of now we're not in danger. The fire is mostly high up in the Huachuca Mountains, so the folks in nearby canyons are most at risk. I put my name in to foster poultry and/or rabbits if needed.

That's great! When I heard that they had evacuated the school in Palominas that they were using as the incident command center I got a terrible sick feeling. I was imagining all the people in that area with farm animals. That's so nice of you to offer space. It was so heartwarming when I saw the spokesperson on tv talking about all the people that stepped forward to offer space for animals. I just hope they can get a handle on that fire before it spreads to more populated areas.

Alohachickens: I will be glad to take the culls, and can take all of them, if they aren't already spoken for.

Mahonri: We're down to 17 eggs. When I opened up the coop this AM, she hopped off the nest for a quick break, and one of the Ameraucana eggs was broken. The shell was quite thin, so I suspect it was an accident.

This is helpful - I've been buying my feed at the most expensive place. I've never heard of Gordon's Feed and Seed, so I guess i'll look them up.

Gordon's Feed & Seed, 600 W Broadway Rd, Phoenix 85041 602-276-8894. On the phone they said the brand was Nutrena.

Stock Shop said theirs is Purina. DD I think is New Mexico Brand, the others I don't know.

Nutrena and Arizona Feeds are now one and the same.
