Arizona Chickens

There are plenty of silkies and cochins in Arizona; having a well shaded setup with plenty of water available is absolutely required for all breeds. Exhibition line birds tend to have somewhat different temperaments than hatchery birds. Not entirely, but less extreme. I would recommend that you wait for cooler weather to get birds, or else get them from local breeders/backyard hobbiests. Medicated feed gets the chicks off to a good start. It is NOT antibiotics, but rather contains amprolium, a thiamin blocker. Coccidia need thiamine to replicate and to thrive, thus a thiamine blocker inhibits the protozoa while the bird builds immmunity. Automatic waterers are wonderful, but do neeed to be checked regularly, especially during hot weather. Hoses break, sometimes the birds manage to knock off the water bowl, the valves become plugged or no longer limit water from going through (causing a continual leak). None are regular occurences, but they do happen now and then. A suitable coop in Arizona tends to be more what other people call pens. Lots and lots of ventilation, with enough solid surfaces for shade. Unless, of course you can add air conditioning...

My 18 week old Trader Joe's leghorn hen "T" has started laying eggs on Monday

.
After a dismal weekend (6 eggs/day) causing me to cave in and install a mister system, the girls are laying again like crazy (14 yesterday)! I totally attribute it to the mister. Too much of a coincidence.

Did they give an antibiotic? Baytril is the usual choice; it is not approved for flock treatment of poultry, which is why they said you will not be able to eat the eggs. Baytril is similar to several human antbiotics, and the concern is development of resistant strains of bacteria. An OTC alternative that is equally effection is Denagard (tiamulin). It is not approved for poultry use in the US, but there are tons of studies on it, and it is approved in Great Britain, most of Europe and elsewhere. It needs to be ordered online. QC Supply has the best price. Tylan is also very good for respiratory infections, and is available OTC in most feed stores. Injectible is much less expensive than soluble powder for the drinking water.

Metacam should have no impact on eating the eggs; it is an NSAID used in dogs.

Phoebe is on Baytril. She hasn't started to lay eggs yet. She is 19 weeks old today. No squatting yet. Will her eggs still be affected when she eventually starts? She is back to her old self today. She still has a "cough" but that is occasional.

You just never know how attached you are to something until it may be taken away from you. I am also very fortunate to have a boss who understands. She told me to take the day off yesterday if need be. Since Dr. Bob watched her, I did go back to work.

Oh, I've had that happen. Didn't know what tho call it.

You know what? I helped it out because I couldn't help myself. I thought that any chick that survived a temp fluctuation like that totally deserved a helping hand. She's had a bath and is VERY vigorous. The two TJ's chicks are VERY fluffy and came out with more feather any of the others. She still has some slick feathers on her head but I'll give her another bath later when she can dry outside in my lap.

Last hatch I didn't help the pip fails. I don't intend to make a habit of it.

You know, next time I hatch it will be with my own home built incubator, well tested beforehand, and with TJ's eggs so I don't waste any.

Congrats on your chicks Meg!!!! Can't wait for pictures
