Arizona Chickens

I live in Qeen Creek and have Sebright Bantams and Golden and Ringneck Pheasants. The toughest part for me was last month before the Monsoon set in. We had a few days of 115 plus. I used a lot of ice in their water several times a day and fed a lot of frozen water mellon. Kept their runs wet, hosed down at all times, and so far we have made it through great. The big thing is shade, without shade all else is lost to the heat.

Congrats on your chicks, Meg. mama Hen, how's that Phoenix doing?
I found a new home for two roosters today, one Silver Duckwing OEGB and the Lavender D'Uccle. Just figured out that one of my Egyptian Fayoumis is a roo but that's ok. I'll be able to breed the three girls, if I decide I like them. So far, they seem to be incredibly hardy and heat resistant. They're history and rarity fascinate me and they're a very interesting little breed. Not cuddle muffins, but like little road runners.

If you are still there on Sunday, I'll come say hi ... my floor gets almost all of the kids who have Pectus repairs. It will be so much nicer now, since we are in the new building - all private rooms and much quieter than the old building. The call lights are set up different, so they go through a "vocera" which is like a cell phone that you wear, and you just hear a soft noise and look at the screen to see who is calling. Also, there are no ringing phones inside of the unit. The calls go to a unit secretary who then uses the vocera to contact the nurse, and the nurse just picks up the correct line. Most kids who have this surgery go home after 3 days, but everyone is different. The only weird thing, is the unit is about 1/4 mile long ... and it curves, so sometimes you look down the hall and there is nobody in sight. It really bothered the families that moved from the old building that had nurses stations (so they could just walk out and see everyone at the station) at first. It kind of bothered us at first too, it's like "wow nobody is there" but they are, it's just so much bigger and there isn't anywhere that staff clusters together.
Anyway, hope you guys get to go home quick! I'll keep you guys in my prayers.

Thanks AZDchicks! I do intend on starting with baby/fuzzies for those very reasons. I've found Ideal poultry but what is MPC?

The coop & run look great, as I'm only planning on a small flock (6 or so) I'm going to build slightly smaller

MPC stands for My Pet Chicken -- www.mypetchicken.com

I intended to start out small too, but my flock has grown

Now, I'm struggling to keep it down to 10 (struggling, cause i haven't sold my extras, since purchasing my new babies). I started out with a 7' x 11' dog run attached to my coop, then added a 2nd 6' x 10' dog run to make the run larger, and now have another attached huge run for their daytime use (horse corral panels with wire attached).

Of course, if you really want to keep it at 6, make the coop and run small, so that you aren't able to add more chickens later.

Pics of the broody and the babies....

And before I put them in the tub that Laree gave me to put underneath... the broody just felt so much better about life with the chicks in side there. Much more calm in the tub... than on the sheet...

I am thinking of getting a couple ducks -- anyone have any baby ducks they either want to sell or trade for some 10 week old chicks?

I want quiet, friendly type breeds - either just 2 females or possibly 2 females and a male? I was thinking of Muscovies or Welsh Harlequins, but am open to suggestions. Any ideas? My 5 year old granddaughter is coming to visit next week and will be here for 2 weeks - Ideally, I'd like babies so she can play with them (she's watched chicks hatch over here before and loves them). I have another broody hen here (those Ameraucanas!), and thought about incubating duck eggs, but gave up that idea last week, when I discovered they take at least 28 days.

Mahonri: your son is in our prayers, too! Thanks for posting those pics of your broody. Too sweet!

Nurseshelly: I'm an RN, too! I dont currently work out of the home, just focusing on my kiddos now. I worked ER and pre op, and I dabbled in PACU and ICU. I just couldnt do peds. You are a special breed!
