How funny -- The Speckled Sussex is my new favorite. Why don't look ever want to own them again?

Out of the 6 new breeds I bought to try out last fall, I ended up purchasing another SS and 2 Welsummer. Both my older SS and my new one are very friendly and I like the Welsummers for their eggs. The older WEL(just under 1 year) is docile (squats every time I'm near), but the 2 younger ones (14 weeks) haven't quite warmed up to me yet. My DEL is also very docile, but huge. The Barnevelder is pretty, but just like the other 3 barnevelders I've owned, is more stand-offish and harder to catch when needed. I like the personality of the PPR (just like the BPR) and I also like the personality of the the BCM (but she hates the heat).

speckled sussex
very pretty, had two of them. one was my 5 year old's. she was the sweetest little bird, very small, seemed to be a runt. he could carry her around the yard all day long. well, the darn thing had some kind of chicken stroke before she ever laid her first egg. it was heartbreaking.
the other one was also smallish, more like a small meatie, but was sooooo loud, laid small eggs and was just a pain. it flapped and screamed and then caught some illness for 2 months. no more!

Oh I'm all behinded (as Sarah would say).

Thinking Labor thoughts at our 3 days overdue Mommy to be.

Favorite breed so far? My Wheaton Americaunas from Mahonri. I have one that always sits on my lap. Last week 3 of the 4 decided they wanted in. A little flighty, very pretty. Can't wait to see how and what they lay. Now, the speckled sussex pullets are entirely different. They are hard to catch, act like you're gonna eat 'em, but smart and great foragers. They taught the rest of them that the yard was bigger than they knew. My new silky Dora is as helpless as a baby, and as docile as all get out. In fact, she's so docile I have to watch out for her. The Frizzled Silkie or Sizzle- Tempest has depth perception problems, and needs largish sized treats (she pecks and misses them), or glasses. Silkie pets are too cool.

Oh, we're in Costa Mesa for DD's appointment in an hour...wish us luck!

Hello everyone,

Such a sad day at the Cluck On Inn. DH went to let the girls out this morning and told me that they would not come out. I figured it was still a bit dark out so they weren't ready to come out. DH left for work at 5:20 so I decided to see what was going on. I went in the coop and they were all standing behind the "people" door. Then I see why they weren't moving. My Lucy laying face down on the floor.

I called DH right away when I found her and he said he thought he heard the girls "scream" about 3 am.

I found her like this:

He and I were just commenting to my B and SIL ( they have 2 of her sisters) how lucky we have been as not to lose any girls this summer. All the talk on here of how everyone was losing their gals to the heat and my smart girls stay in their A/C coop all day. I am perplexed as to what has happened to Lucy. She was running around the yard last evening before roosting. They all got blueberries for a treat. Nothing unusual. (She has been eating and drinking and pooping the same.) Locked them up when all were "home". I did one last check on them last night around 10pm and all were fine, up on their roost.

So now I am wondering if I should call my vet and see why she passed away or just leave it to nature. Everyone else looks healthy. What do you think? This is my first loss. My poor baby..never even got to lay an egg yet.
