Arizona Chickens

Just can't do it - I can't pick 1 breed. If I were to start over though and just pick a few for a very small flock, I'd choose:

Ameraucana or EE (my Ameraucanas are extremely broody, while my EEs aren't
BPR
Welsummer
SS
(Black or Red Star would be next choice, if I needed a 5th breed)

That would give me friendly breeds and a nice variety of egg colors. Okay.... my favorite breed for temperament is probably the Ameraucnas and EEs (both seem to have the same temperament), but they don't lay quite as well as the others I listed, plus I am tired of my Ameraucanas going broody on me.

I am so sorry for your loss

. For my 2 cents worth...I think that the U of A Veterinary Diagnostic Lab is fantastic.

Mama Hen Chris, I'm so sorry to hear about your Lucy. She was clearly a loved bird. I also second what pimachickens said about the U of A Veterinary Diagnostic Lab. They are amazing people. I was so surprised at how helpful they were to me during my poultry tick infestation. They got back to me on the same day I called them and one of the professors there even called me back the next day after spending the night reading up on the problem. I just can't say enough good things about them. I hope they are also good at necropsies on chickens so that you can find some answers.

SchizoSkittles, I remember you! You know, there are several members here that live in the San Tan Valley. Hopefully you can find a place that lets you have chickens too.

Ok, all 6 chickens are dusted, coop is clean, new grow out pen is put together! Annnnnd....no labor.

. At least it is all done. For now. The dusting went better than expected. Thank you Laree for the tip on using rubbermaid. Worked great. My new grow out pen has a wire bottom. The wire is coated but I feel bad about them standing on it. Any thoughts one way or the other about that floor?

Did you get photos?? Sounds like the tub idea is better than turning them upside down.

Once you get the kiddos to bed and you are resting, that is probably when labor will start. This little one has to be a girl! My girls were late and it still takes them forever to get ready to go somewhere! My son came 3 days early. Will root for a girl.

Gallo I am hoping maybe to hear something earlier than Friday. The curiosity is building.

pimachickens and ArizonaDesertChicks Thank you for the sentiments. She was a wonderful gal. She is already missed by her sisters. They were calling for her tonight to come home to roost.

I went out jogging tonight, mostly dirt roads, (its very rural here) and what crosses my path.....A coyote!!! the sun was still out. It did not even break a stride, turned and looked at me and kept going. I think I was more freaked out than it was. I know that we have coyotes, but not that close. It was about 1/4 a mile from my house!

No photos! There was a lot of dust and I didnt want the kiddos around. I locked 'em in the house with DH. He offered to do it for me, but I told him he could next time! He was great about it. I thought he'd want to kill all the chickens once he heard the word "lice". Instead he called all his pest control friends and gathered a bunch of information. He even ordered a duster from our rep so it will be even easier next time!

Thank you for the info.

She went down to U of A today and I should get the results back by Friday. Have you heard if they were any good there? The only thing was from them is if I wanted her back, they would have her cremated by one of their 2 pet services. They will not release her otherwise. A gentleman from my work owns a pet crematory here in PHX and told me he would cremate her for free for me. Since U of A won't release her to me, I told them to dispose her body.

I didn't know U of A did that sort of thing. Thanks for the info and I'll be interested to learn the results, too. I just assumed, since they didn't have a vet school, that they wouldn't do necropsies.
Again, I'm really sorry about your loss.
