Arizona Chickens

We've seen them a number of times now walking down the street right in front of our house (and other places in town). I live in the center of Tucson! There are more of them out there than people think.

I would think it would be written clearly in the HOA documentation if livestock or poultry is allowed. I don't think you would find it all in one place though (perhaps it would be at the Maricopa County Recorders Office?). I believe Mesa (Planning and Zoning?) has a list of registered interested parties whenever you have to notify your neighbors of certain modifications and you can input a certain radius and print out a list -you may be able to at least get the names of the HOA from that type of a search if it is in Mesa and then look up on the County website for HOA recorded documents if there is such. I don't think San Tan is in Mesa though so check with whatever city (or maybe just the County) for something similar.

Most of San Tan is unincorporated county. I think some is in Maricopa County, but most in Pinal. I could be off on some of it being in Maricopa County, though.

Things that are allowed are not necessarily listed; Restrictions, or conditions are more likely to be stated. For example, mine say that animals and fowl must be contained behind a fence and not allowed to wander off or fly about.

Your best bet is to read the CC&Rs. They should be recorded at the County Recorder's office. Not sure about Pinal County, but Maricopa County has all recorded documents available online. Sometimes hard to locate as you search on the business name, and sometimes various abbreviations are used as well as being spelled out. Also, there can be quite a number of recorded documents, especially if the HOA is large or old. Another option for finding out the information is to look at the Annual Report filed with the Corporation Commission. That report lists the names and contact information for the Association's officers. You can call them and ask your questions. State law requires that you be given a copy of the CC&Rs, Bylaws, Rules and other association documents prior to closing, and sign a statement acknowledging that they are a legally binding contract. If there is a property you are interested in, and want to be sure tht poultry are allowed, you can and should be shown the documents on request.

Also, when driving through neighborhoods, look to see if the yards have animals: chickens, goats, sheep, cattle, horses, etc. Or what appear to be animal facilities: barns, coops, etc.

Lots and lots of them. Coyotes have a very large range (I think the radius is about 20 or 25 miles). I am quite definitely in the middle of civilization and they are seen around south Tempe fairly often.

I have some raised pens with wire floors, some with sand & shavings, some that have both. The birds who are in pens with both solid floors as well as raised wire shelfs (or lofts, if you prefer) seem to spend as much time on the wire as on the solid flooring. That removes it from my mind as being a concern. Just make sure the openings are not too large compared to the size of their feet.

Thank you for the info.

She went down to U of A today and I should get the results back by Friday. Have you heard if they were any good there? The only thing was from them is if I wanted her back, they would have her cremated by one of their 2 pet services. They will not release her otherwise. A gentleman from my work owns a pet crematory here in PHX and told me he would cremate her for free for me. Since U of A won't release her to me, I told them to dispose her body.

I didn't know U of A did that sort of thing. Thanks for the info and I'll be interested to learn the results, too. I just assumed, since they didn't have a vet school, that they wouldn't do necropsies.
Again, I'm really sorry about your loss.

Every state has a diagnostic vet lab. Some do more detailed testing than others, and when required they send things to other labs that have the needed equipment and expertise. Texas has one of the best in the country.

I must have missed something......why a mass cull??

Rather than eating my roosters, I kept them (those hatched since the New Year's Day) to help witha few research projects for the Univeristy. They also needed elderly hens and newly hatched. Those were the hardest, since I love my old chickens, and the babies are "chicken potential".

But I am really, really, really REALLY glad to get rid of al those roosters.

With all this lice talk, I was thinking... If you have a closed coop (four walls and a roof), could you not just use one of those "bombs" they make for insect control in the house? Or would that not penetrate into every crack? I am just lazy and thinking if I ever have a problem, I would prefer that over meticulously cleaning everything with a tooth brush

I have "new" neighbors. My father owns the house next to us and he is a snowbird. So the house is currently empty. Since it is waaaay to hard to control temps on little chicks outside I moved my precious 2 week old Sulmtaler chicks into his living room (I have four legged furry things in my house and doors are left open...). I have to take a picture

. The AC is set for perfect bird temp, it's quiet, no predators - the perfect chicken house! Should I tell him?

I did build an elaborate tub like brooder to keep down the mess. I even made them an enclosed "litter box" so they can take a sand bath without getting too much dust on the bookshelves.
I am in charge of cleaning anyway so I guess I will just have a "little" more work this time to get the house ready for him.

I can just picture my dad coming back to his snow bird home, seeing a large pen in the middle of the floor with chickens in it.

We'd have to re-rock the ceiling and quite possibly pull his head from it!
