Arizona Chickens

DM I got a couple from a lady in Gilbert and the other 4 from a guy in Chandler. The are about 5 months old so it will be a couple months probably before I get any eggs but I'm really excited!!

I forgot to mention earlier - I bought a bag of pellets, but they don't like them. They prefer crumble. It's Hi Pro brand that I got at Higley Feed and I've literally only used a handful of it. I just got it yesterday so it is still fresh. Anyone close to me use pellets? I will sell it to you for 12 bucks! I think it was 15 or 16. PM me if you want it!

I recently got home from the Tucson poultry show. There were a few breeds of chickens I hadn't see before, so that was interesting. My DS, HotWing Stables, ended up with four 1st place ribbons, and 1 2nd place. He had 2 chickens, a black dutch cockeral and a birchen OEGB rooster, get Best Variety. It was a long 2 days, but there was always something going on.

I did find about a Spring Show put on by the Arizona Poultry Organization, ABA District Meet, on February 26, 27, & 28 2010. It is held at the Pinal County Fair Grounds, Casa Grande AZ.

Judges: Donald Barger, California; Brian Decker, Washington; & Tracy Hill, TX

Events: Showmanship, judging contest, gamefowl extravaganza, and a youth show.

For more information or to get a show catalog contact:

Suzie Scott (show secretary) 480-234-0335
Russ Page (show superintendent) 602-708-7165
Kyle Tripp (game fowl superintendent) 520-245-7485
Lacy Greer 602-809-0255

This might be something my DS and I check out.

If I hear of any other shows, I'll let you know.

Angie

I am in Peoria. so is my friend but i think 5 months would have worked for her for they are big enough then to hold their own with her other 3.

we might be on your side of town soon... we keep looking for porperty over there...made an offer on one in QC... want more land for garden and chickens...the city thing is tense, always wanting to keep them quiet. They cackle every time they lay and egg...got another one today:D

i use crumb too...sorry.

OK folks, I have a mystery layer.

Of all my chickies, the only ones I KNOW are laying are the two new Exchequer Leghorn hens, Dottie and Spottie. They've been here ~2 weeks, and each lay an egg 5 days a week (or so). Neither has layed anywhere except the nesting box. Yesterday neither layed an egg, and since it was Saturday, I figured they were resting from a night of post-Thanksgiving partying.

This morning, both layed and egg. One around 10am, and one at noon. I KNOW they layed at those times because I "chased" both out of the nexting boxes before they had a chance to lay. Both times the girls were still on the nest when I came back, and clucked at me disaprovingly when I took the still-hot egg.

Just now I went to give the chickies some treats, and found a THIRD egg behind the chicken ladder. It was cold to the touch. I know it wasn't there at noon, since I moved the ladder, installed some sound dampeners, and raked the area clean. It was white and about the same size as the other two eggs.

Both Dottie and Spottie lay in the nesting box, so who is my mystery layer? All the pullets are still sorta young, but since Dottie and Spottie arrived, have suddenly gone "red in the face", started squatting, and have been mounted by the new roo. I guess I am saying: they are no longer babies! But who is it? If I follow the earlobe rule, I should only have one white-egg layer, my polish: whom everyone pegged as a roo.

Possible culprits:

Nugget- Buff orp: Aquired 8/5/09 at approx 3(?) weeks old
3 EEs- Hatched ~7/25/09
Runt- Brahma mutt: Hatched~ 7/25/09
Slayer- Buff brahma: Rescued, no red comb or wattles ~20 weeks old
Popo- Polish: Hatched: 9/1/09
4 CMs- 11 weeks old.

Ideas? It seems unlikely Dottie or Spottie dropped another egg in under 4 hours.

DM, the black sex links I got are being a little rough on my younger ones so I may need to find them a home with older chickens where they can't be such bullies. Let me know if you're interested.

No takers on the pellets, huh?

Brittany - I'm sorry about the loss of your chickens, but am glad you found some new ones.

CluckinCrazy
- I use pellets, but I'm assuming if you bought your pellets from Higley feed, you live on the east side of town - Mesa?
I'm way over in northwest Glendale. I have to sell a couple of my black sexlinks too, for the very same reason - well.... one of them totally picks on the younger ones - and another is getting picked on too much by my 'confused' RIR hen (the RIR thinks she's a rooster and mounts the more submissive hens). This poor sexlink is getting her back feathers ruined. I'm thinking they would do fine in a new, smaller flock with a different pecking order.

Laree - I have no idea who layed your mystery egg. How's your sick chick? Is she all better?

Tonopah Patti -
Cute pics. I have a frizzle too, but unfortunately, my one & only frizzle is a roo
I can't believe how much of a 'roo' he is at only 9 weeks old (8 weeks in the photo and started his baby crowing at 7 weeks):

DM - The black sex links are 5 months. They are tall and thin and just need to fill out.

ArizonaDesertChicks - I actually live on the Gilbert/Queen Creekborder, but I work near the airport @ Priest and Washington if you ever head that way...

Good morning all,

DM, I just have dirt, however, I use pine wood shavings on the ground. I use the shavings in the nest boxes as well. The chickens can scratch down into the dirt for their dust bath. I have a camo army netting over the top of the other pen area. This is where my Big kids live. I have 2 hutches and a cage coop with a roof and a plastic small doghouse on top of that. The dog house is The Loft. The lower level is The Sugar Shack. ( The girls like to lay their eggs there.) and the loft also. One hutch is called Peeps Place. The other is always ready for some body sick or needing time out. I spread the pine shavings thick in the pen. The chickens break it up quite well. They love to dig in it.My Chicken area never stinks. It is easy to clean. In the winter I leave most of the poo on the ground and add a layer of shavings on top. It helps to keep the ground warm. I have been told that. This is the first winter for trying that. There are certain areas that I do rake, like under the roost. This goes around my trees and all is well. My new pen area is more of an Aviary style. I have a plastic playhouse that I converted into a Coop. The Frizzle House Bed and Breakfast. I also have 2 cages in the area. One of the cages is upright and sets on a stand with a bottom in it. it is about 4 1/2' tall. I am going to make a feeding station out of it. I can hang a feeder in side of it. The good part is The baby' are already eating in there. I can just change the feeder when they get bigger. I am having a ball creating Peep Town.

Arizona Desert Chick, I have one Silkie Roo in my new bunch. Your Boy is so cute. I have 2 black and 1 white frizzle girls and 1 black Frizzle Boy. Then there is Louie-Lu-Li, my little silkie.
