Arizona Chickens

I am so sorry for your loss.

I hope everyone is well this Friday. Nothing exciting going on here, except EVERY weekend for the next 6 weeks is crazy busy. I suspect my housekeeping will decline accordingly.

Here are the pics of this week's hatch:

There are 5 Austrolorps and 4 silkies. They did NOT appreciate the flash at 5 am this morning

I know nothing about silkies...but I got the Ausrtros as tester eggs from Cammy, a BYC-er. The silkies were extras, since her Austros were being stingy with the laying.

And just for fun, the boys finding that a bunch of the ladies had taken over their playhouse.

Good Morning Arizona. Sipping my coffee and waiting for daylight while checking in to BYC. Has everyone got their votes in for our girl Anne? Please vote!

Looks like the rain is going to pass me by today. I can get some laundry done and hang the clothes outside. My DS and Lady got me a Round Clothes line and installed the sleeve for it so that I can remove it if I want. It goes up and down. This will be my first chance to try it out. Good old Solar Drying. There are still folks who like to hang clothes out side. That would be me for one. If hung correctly you can fold as you take down. Then all you have to do is put them away. Saves lots of time and work.

My Little chicks are growing fast. They have almost all of the new feathers. The older they get the cuter they get. The Frizzles are fluff balls. I think Lily is a Cochin, White as snow and as soft as a fluffy cotton ball. Louie-Lu-Li, Is living up to the Sultan Breed. They still wait for me to put them to bed. They did go in one time, by there self, when I turned the light on and waited until just after dark to check on them. Now, that it is colder at night, I have been turning the light on for heat around 4:30pm so that the coop is warm when they go to bed. My big kids are roosting outside of their hutches. Some on the Roof of the hutch. I do have nest looking places in the loft coop. Mr Peep goes into his hutch and into the nest box. He has a bum leg and has bedded in there and keep his feet from freezing. Poor little guy. I'm trying to make a hard decision about Freezer Camp.

Here is a pic of Mr. Peep

Yeah, I wouldn't mind getting old so much, if I could retire from the job. . . saw the cardiologist yesterday, and it looks like I will live to see another birthday. . . at 64 and still working as a full time horticulturist, I am more than ready to be a little less busy. . . but there is no way I can retire until I can get on medicare. . . still trying to figure out how to survive on SS, too. . . fortunatly, I have no debt, the house is paid for, as are both my truck and my car. Been working hard the past couple years to get things "set up" for a more relaxed and self sustaining lifestyle. . . wish me luck!

Laree...How do you know they are Silkies? they are all so beautiful! Lucky you! When my life gets back to norm again...I am going to start up with baby chicks again....I am thinking by next Summer I should have layers!!!!Yeah!!

That is ALL Chloe has asked for this Christmas. I am still busy trying to take care of all my Aunt's stuff to take care of chicks too!

G'evening everyone... Mahonri, so very sorry to hear of your recent loss... well the hatch this week was a bust, except one....I'm dying to save this little twerp, so better go post in the appropriate section..Have a good weekend everyone..

To answer your question--I know they are silkies 'cause I hatched them
wink.png
No really...I did a test ship/hatch from Cammy on BYC. She was going to send me 18 Australorps and a few silkie extras, but her hens were being stingy. So: I ended up with 12 Austra and 6 silkie eggs. The eggs were pretty easy to tell apart, and Cammy marked them all. They look REALLY different from the Austalorps, so no worries there.

Cammy said there was a chance they'd be blue silkies, and after looking at a few pics, we think 2 or 3 are blues. But, who knows?

I think silkies look cool, but am not a afficianado. So, they will probably be up for grabs. I really only need two australorp hens, so eventually those too.

Good Morning Arizona. Where is everyone? Sleeping in or gone to Church?

My dog Abby got me up. When she hears or smells the coffee pot she starts nagging me to get up. She wants to eat now. This gets my cat Archie going. You would think they never get fed the way they go on. Like they are starving. My other dog Honey Boy Bear likes to be outside. He will wait until I call him to come eat. He never nags. The cat is called Archie Bunker for a reason.

MY EE Cleo has not lay an egg for weeks. She was giving me a Blue egg every other day. Now nothing. The other one Chicklet, I thought was giving me the pink egg. Her egg is longer and slender. The color is a light tan. Who could be laying the Pink egg? I only have 3 RIR Hens. 2 EE hens. This is a puzzle.

I changed the light bulb in the Wee Ones house, from a 60 watt down to a 40 watt. That should keep it around 50 degrees inside. The temp was at 60 when I closed the door last night. I did preheat for about an hour. I don't think I will preheat tonight and see what temp. I am holding. The back of the house gets the last sun. That helps in warming it up. I don't want to have fried Chickens at this age.

Fried chickens?
I have 10 8 1/2 old chicks outside in their open style coop. They have access to a wood box (set on the ground) with a 100 watt red light and they sleep in there. Is it too warm?
They always seem very content when I check on them.
They can go in and out if they want to but I know chickens don't always do what's best for them.

What temp should they be sleeping at? I could check it with a min/max thermometer tonight.

I really don't know what temp should be either. I thought about taking the tote out of the playhouse and clipping the heat lamp on to the inside. I can put a deep bedding of pine shavings in there and I do have a roost bar. They seem to want the door open at night. But I am a worry wart Chick Mother. I want my baby kids to be warm on a freezing nigh got to run for now.
