Arizona Chickens

Nessa, omg, that was soooo cute, I love it!! Thank you for sharing, I think I will make one of my little one's picture...It will cheer me up to watch it as he is still not home yet...

Wow, its getting windy out there....covered an old cage with thick plastic and attached it to the coop and made the cochins stay in there...as long as they dont get wet they should be fine, although the DBF thought that the chickens in the shower stall last week was pretty funny

My little Trooper chick is still "with us", so very very happy about that, hoping he grows into a big strong (girl!) but as long as he/she makes it I'm happy..

Nessa, that is an adorable video!! It really put a smile on my face this morning.

My newest barred rock is laying eggs that are more of a pink color - definitely not the light brown/tan the other 2 barred rocks are laying. I know the eggs are hers, because she was the first of my younger ones to lay and was the only one laying for awhile (I've actually watched her too). Maybe one of your RIRs is also putting out 'brown' eggs minus a lot of the brown color, which makes the eggs look pink.

I have a mystery egg too - I haven't been able to decide which of my younger pullets has started laying the little brown eggs - it could be my australorp or the 2nd EE (the first EE to start laying is laying tiny green ones). I've yet to catch either of these other two chickens on the nest, but have been finding little brown eggs for over a week now.

These are all the eggs I collected yesterday & today (minus the tiny green ones from Tiger). We don't eat Tiger's eggs because she is housed with the baby chicks and is eating some of their chick starter - the older ones picked her head raw once she started laying. You can see the two eggs in the center are more pinkish (is this the color yours are?). The 3 huge ones to the left are from my older barred rocks - the little one on the top row, just to the right of the pinkish one is the mystery egg.

Nessa - cute video!

Well, the guy that bought the house across the alley from us is remodeling it. Yesterday they put in a huge bath tub. It came in a large crate that sure looks like a chicken coop to me. I watched, and as soon as they put it into the alley, I snagged it. The thing should go together real easy.

I was going to put it together today, but it is Sunday and it is raining off and on. I do not work with electrical tools in the rain. Maybe tomorrow.

My lushious bermuda lawn has been picked to death and rototilled and fertilized beyond belief by the chickens. My wife says that those chickens have to go back into the coop and stay there until we have some grass back there. I guess they will be on lock down for a couple of weeks or so.

I put my 14 week old pullets out with the rest of the hens. They still are not part of the group yet, but the rooster promptly did his thing with them. That made my wife mad as, well a wet hen. She has been on the rooster's case ever since she went to that feminist seminar. I have got to admit, he is rough and tough with the girls. No way is he a gentleman. There maybe a crock pot in his future.

My chicks that hatched on the lst are thirteen days old now. Actually, they belong to my son, but he just won't take them home. He has a chicken intolerant wife.

Out of the whole hatch, only six made it and survived. Three are Rhode Island Reds and three are Rhode Island Red crossed with Barred Rock. With that cross, the cockerals have a white spot on the top of their heads. Looks like two of them are roosters. They bear the mark of Cain.

Such is life.

Okay life is settling down and know I am getting more info too....I am thinking by spring we can start up with chicks again.

So my question now is...once your "hens" stop laying...what do you do with them? I know they are pretty usless at this point...can not be eaten...I can not kill anything...so what happens at that point that is easy for the hen and for ME!

Mystery egg looks a little like my Delawares, or my Cochin or my faverolle.

In case you haven't seen it,.... just for fun. Christmas Brag Letter

Well it's back to work for three days and then off to Utah to pick up and bring home son#2 (the one going to Budapest for 2 years starting in January)

I got home from work today, and found out we'd lost a pullet. The Lakenvelder pullet, Evie, who was a very sweet tempered bird, went missing. My husband looked over the fence into our neighbors' yard, and in the yard of the people directly behind us (we have a foot block wall between us and all of our neighbors) was a pile of feathers the right color, and a pitbull mix. I know that these things happen, but I'm still sad, mainly because she must have suffered.

Nessa - cute video!

I need some education again. You mentioned that you could not eat Tigers eggs because she is housed with the baby chicks and is eating the chick starter....What happens to Tigers eggs that causes them to not be okay to eat.....I know it must be a stupid question but obviously something I should know that do not know for in the future I am sure I will have the same situation with baby chicks and a hen. Thanks for mentioning it.

AZKat -- I'm so sorry - that wwould be an awful discovery. Did the dog get into your yard or did the chicken find its way over to the neighbors house?

DM -- Yes, Nessa is correct -- the chick starter is medicated. We are giving her eggs to the chickens though (scrambled with cheese), so no waste. Your mama hen won't be laying for awhile if is is raising up her chicks, so I wouldn't worry about her feed. Once she starts laying, she will probably be eating normal layena with the rest of the flock again.

My mystery egg is no longer a mystery. I found a small green egg on the run floor today! This means the mystery egg belongs to the BA and my EE is laying a green egg (like she's supposed to). Finally, all 4 of my younger pullets are laying and I'm glad that all 5 EEs are laying green or mint colored eggs

Now, if Lacy would just start back up again - I don't think she has layed for months and she's only 14 months old.

Yep, That is the color pink I am getting. It has to come from one of my RIR girls. I any have 3. I have 2 EE. 5 girls in all. I will post a pic of each EE.

This is Chicklet. She is laying a long thin, light brown egg. Willy Boy with her.

This is the Blue egg I was getting.

This is Cleo, The layer of the Blue egg.

Here they are eating frozen corn on the cb. Summer Treat.
