Arizona Chickens

I will try the separation... I do hope that works. She even picks on the other CQ. She has not started to lay yet. She's just now coming of age and I'm thinking that since she has not yet started, she may not start until it warms up a bit.

Thanks for the advice!!

A little off-topic, but look what I made for Ender's 4th birthday. Every night we tell the story of Ender and the Dragon, which changes like those "mad-libs" books. I supply the story line, Ender supplies the names, activities, and random nouns. It is sorta chicken-related, since he names almost all the dragons after our chickens (ie Runt).

Once Francis protected Ender's chickens from the monster robot and then took them all on a merry-go-round. I left that out of this book because, as you can see, photo-shopping is not one of my super-powers.

Evening fellow Arizonians, hope everyone had an enjoyable Christmas!

So last night I had my first bid predator attack

Well, attempt at an attack; no one was taken or injured as I think the "2:30am-those-crazy-dogs-are-whining-and-need-to-pee" scared whatever it was away. Basically, it scaled the 6 foot block fence, then proceeded to utterly trample and knock down my potted plants around the aviaries, then climb on top, rip back 6 feet of the shade/reed fencing and tried chewing/pulling the wire top up. Weird part was, the reed fencing on the sides, there was a hole that was chewed/clawed with blood spatters, yet this hole was 4 feet from the bottom and 2 feet from the top! If this animal stood and bit a hole at 4 feet, it would have to be a big animal....I guess it probably was still on top and hung over the side (?) Maybe..... I was thinking Coyote, as I saw two just a few days ago in the middle of the afternoon just crossing our street....but maybe Bobcat? I hope just a coyote, I can probably deter a coyote but a bobcat....no thanks.

So going to be spending New Years reinforcing all the aviary tops....thinking welded wire, chain link panels, OSB, barbed wire..(kidding about the barbed wire..maybe:p ) Any good ideas to reinforce chain link kennels on the top? I was thinking Hog panels covered with welded wire but not sure I can arrange that by New years I guess..

There are lots of racoons out there too, and they could well have caused the damage that you describe. I will be building a new coop run combo this winter, and need to be aware that even in town, this kind of thing can happen, good luck and thanks for the reminder.

Good morning all. Just a quick visit.

Enjaytoo, Sorry to hear about the critter trying to break into you Aviary. That is scary. Good luck securing it. I have welded wire, with chicken wire on top of that. I am in process of adding a really strong plastic I" hole openings, wire. I will install this from the underside of the top. I have branches sticking through the wire. I can mold the plastic around the frame work. I have been worried about fox and Coyotes. I am always checking my pen areas. Good luck.

Everyone have a great day.

Yikes! Roughly, what part of town are you in? Someone mentioned racoons....do we have those around Phoenix Metro? My goodness, this sounds like a lot of damage!

Racoons are much more common that people think, in the Phoenix area. Because they are nocturnal, they are rarely seen.

I didn't think there were racoons around until I saw one (no longer moving) on the off-ramp by my house.
