Arizona Chickens

So as i listen to everyone looks like most chickens average 4-5 eggs a week....my Buff Orp lays about 5- 6 but she started first. The RIR laid next and it looks like she is laying maybe 4...one of the Delawares laid, i recognized that one cause it was larger....now the only one I recognize is the buff cause her eggs are lighter and smallest and the rest look about the same size...that means the RIR's eggs are larger than they were in the beginning...(not more fart eggs yet).....I though that the 4 of them would produce maybe 16-20 eggs a week. They seem to like the cooler weather cause that is when they started to lay.....i am getting maybe 12-14 eggs a week....so someone is not laying I'd say because the buff still puts out 5-6. What do you guys think....

When I was a little kid, I used to love the Pabst Blue Ribbon Commercials. . . "in the land of sky blue wa- ah -ters"

And everything was great until you actually tasted the stuff...

Do they even sell that beer anymore? Is Milwalkee still there?

They sure do not sell it in AZ. . . been quite a while since I've lived in the midwest!

The DH was all about getting that $20 wine cooler while he was out and about, but couldn't because his truck is full of materials. I asked him repeatedly if he had looked at the CL posting, but he said, "For $20, who cares?"

Then he got home and actually LOOKED at the link for the cooler and threw a hissy fit. Now I am not allowed to get it

He's afraid I would hatch thousands of eggs! If he hadn't seen it prior to picking it up, I'd have me a new incubator!

Laree - You always make me laugh. Love the half and half comment. My neighborhood might fit into that same category - I wonder sometimes. As for the hubb, I think he might have a point.. I could see you hatching thousands of eggs. Still - that would have been cool. Sorry you missed out.

Besides the lack of light, some of my chickens are molting, which also affects their egg laying - also, the type of chickens you have makes a difference too (my barnevelders have stopped).

Your chickens aren't old enough to molt - maybe yours won't slow down their production this winter. I would think if they were going to lay less this winter you would have already seen a difference. Lucky you - enjoy!

In an earlier post, I said I was getting about 5 eggs daily from my pen of 12 hens. To clarify, only 8 of those hens are actually laying right now. Of my 12 older hens/pullets, 1 barnevelder never started up again since going broody at the end of summer, the other barnevelder stopped laying about 2 weeks ago (getting ready to molt?). One of my EEs and a barred rock are molting heavily and because of this they have also stopped laying (the ee has completely lost her tail feathers - almost looks like an araucana).

I get 5 eggs per day (occasionally 6) from these hens:

14 month old hens that are still giving eggs (I think - not sure on the RIR):
1 barred rocks
1 rhode island red (PR)
2 easter eggers

12 month old hen:
1 black star - still laying regularly

7-8 month old pullets (these 3 are laying almost every day):
1 barred rock (7 months)
1 black australorp (7 month)
1 EE (8 months old)

I also have 1 more 8 month old EE in a pen with the babies and she is laying almost every day.

Thank you Nessa. There are some good discussion by the folks in cold country that have me convinced our chickens are fine here.

Hey Nessa, I wanted to send a link to the picture of your automatic waterer to my cousin, but I can't find it. Can you re-post it and the directions or direct me to the original one?

Here is a pic of how the float/ water line is hooked into the end. I know it's not the best picture sorry. The gold part in my hand is what hooks to the water hose. The other end of the black line connects to the end of the float that is inside the pipe.

That scrubby thing is so cool especially if you soak it in bleach about 30 mins before using it. You just offset each stiff scrubby and then cut a small hole through them all big enough to poke the eyebolt through. Put on washer and bolt super tight so the scrubbies don't move about and tie a nylon rope to the end. Put a weight on the end of the rope and sail it through to the other end of the waterer and pull that through the pipe.
