Questions and Answers Regarding 3-Nitro (Roxarsone)

What did FDA announce?

FDA announced that Alpharma, a subsidiary of Pfizer Inc, will voluntarily suspend sale of the animal drug 3-Nitro
00ae.png
(Roxarsone) in response to a new FDA study of 100 broiler chickens that detected inorganic arsenic, a known carcinogen, at higher levels in the livers of chickens treated with the drug 3-Nitro® (Roxarsone) than in untreated chickens. FDA officials stress that the levels of inorganic arsenic detected were very low and that continuing to eat chicken as 3-Nitro

is suspended from the market does not pose a health risk.

3-Nitro® (Roxarsone) is an arsenic-based animal drug, manufactured by Alpharma LLC, a subsidiary of Pfizer Inc. It is approved to help prevent coccidiosis when used in combination with certain animal drugs. Coccidiosis is a parasitic disease that infects the intestinal tracts in poultry and can lead to death in poultry. 3-Nitro

is also approved for weight gain, feed efficiency and improved pigmentation in chickens.

What is arsenic?

Arsenic is an element that is present in the environment as a naturally-occurring substance or as a result of contamination from human activity. It is found in water, air, and soil in organic and inorganic forms.

Is one type of arsenic more harmful than the other?

Yes. The inorganic form is more harmful than the organic form, and has been found to be a human carcinogen. Organic arsenic is not known to be carcinogenic. Organic arsenic is the form of arsenic that is the active ingredient in approved arsenic-based animal drugs, including 3-Nitro

(Roxarsone).

Are there animal drugs approved with arsenic in them?

Yes. 3-Nitro
00ae.png
(Roxarsone) was the first arsenic-based product approved for use in animal feed and is currently the most commonly used arsenic-based animal drug. Other arsenic-based drugs that are approved for use in food-producing animals (poultry and swine) include nitarsone, arsanilic acid, and carbarsone. Current data indicate that only the 3-Nitro

and nitarsone products are being marketed.

I got the auto water-er installed.

I took the previous 40 oz brooder nipple water-er out, but they didn't seem to want to go anywhere near the giant orange Homer bucket...
... so I waited a bit & took one of the fat over-fed Cornish and rubbed her beak against the nipple. The others saw that and thought
the Cornish was gitt'n something they weren't,

rushed over and figured out how to take a drink.

Now I have to steal Gallo's Award Winning Treadle Feeder and adapt it so I can feed 12 hours on and 12 hours off. Tracy sent me a link from
the meaties page (cause I'm too lazy to go there) which convinced me (easily done) that I am over feeding the fatties.

...off to hack another one of Gallo's ideas!

Anyway, Swamp cooler pads are made of excelsior & can be had locally if you need. Great idea!

And excelsior is what exactly? Some variation of wood fibers? Or something similar?

Picture the way they make feed pellets, sub wood for grain & you've got it!

They grind up wood and mix it with water (pulp) add a binder and force it through a die (spaghetti pasta maker). Not sure it it requires heat to dry but I wouldn't be surprised.

A bit-o-research reveals that it is also made from shredded wood fibers as well excelsior site

What do you need help on?

Wanna come over & help me find the hole saw? THAT would be great

I'm trying to get a hole in the side of this fridge in which to put the t-stat (so I can operate from the outside)...and Jason left me with very little tools to work with today. Apparently he thinks he has to WORK or something silly like that.

So I'm just pouting right now...I can't quit or I'll never hear the end of it (from myself). Just gotta find that hole saw...
