When it is cold, plain metal can be bad for their feet and cause frostbite--even if it isnt freezing. Plus it can numb out their toes and they fall off in their sleep. *FOOOP!*

I used duct tape and sports tape around my aluminium roost---it seemed to help.

Good point! I'm going to put a temporary freestanding 2x4 root together today.

I'd sure like to get a tree branch or three for the permanent roosts.

Any drawbacks to a tree branch?

We made a freestanding 2x4 roost for our grow out coop. I'll look for a picture.

We also just used 2x4s for the permanent roosts.

Funny, I put that rice milk box in the space above the nest boxes because the pullets were going in there. It was supposed to be temporary until I could make something else. That was 3 years ago.

Oh well, it works.

At 4-5 weeks, they will need heat at this time of year--heck, even I put jacket on if I'm going out at night. I have babies who are a couple of weeks old on the back porch with a heat lamp; I have a couple who are a bit older than yours with their mama, and they don't seem to snuggle under her as much as they did just a couple of weeks ago. If you open out their wings, you will see that they still have lots of feathers to grow. At 4-5 weeks, the only way to determine gender is DNA testing. Silkies tend to matue more slowly than many other breeds, so don't expect crowing any earlier than 3-4 months, and it is really more likely at 5-8 months. Although I had one boy who was a good 10 months old when he suddenly went from looking like a demure sweet pullet into a raunchy, crowing cockerel.

Thanks, SS. I think I'll start putting them in the tractor tomorrow and use a heat lamp at night with a little brooder box that they can snuggle up in. They do seem very immature compared to the other chicks I got from Ideal at the same time, a bunch of packing peanuts and Cornish X, all of whom have been out for weeks and are now actually out with the adults in the coop, getting along just fine.

The one's you gave me are all beetles now.
For some reason, every time I put a piece of veggie in there it causes mold. Even dry stuff like cabbage. I wonder if I need a bigger box or more holes in the lid?

What kind of lid do you have?
I don't think you even need a lid if they are in the house where lizards, birds and chickens can't get to them.

Tupperware with holes drilled in it. Maybe I'll just take the lid off.
