Did you happen to read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy before deciding to get 42 chickens?

I put my silkies out at about 7-8 weeks, but I let them stay inside longer than I probably should have. They just love that garden bathtub. It was also Spring time when the temps weren't as cold.

I have a buff orpington that needs to be re-homed. He is a good boy to the 2 Cochins I have but he doesn't get along well with my other roos. I also have a "special needs" Wyandotte that he tends to be a little rough with so I have to keep her all by herself and she's really lonely. She used to be with the Cochins, but they jump the fence to be with the roo. He is really friendly to me also. You can PM me if you are interested.
Thanks a lot and have a great day.

It's a lot harder to judge when the weatehr is getting colder, not warmer. My ~6 week old babies still seem to get cold; I have a heat lamp in with them 24/7, with plenty of space for them to get away from the heat if they want. I can'gt see taking it away any time soon. One looked a bit chilly this morning, but one of the two lamps had burned out. I'll replace that bulb f=before the temperature drops tonight.

If your in no hurry to put them out I would leave them in for as long as you can. I use to take mine out in the day and bring them in in the evening. My little banty's get real cold at night and in the morning hours. They shiver a lot. I go out in the mornings to open the doors and my little one jumps up on me and works his way into my jacket where it's warmer. I let him stay there for about 1/2 hour to get warmed up.
You could probably take them out in the mornings after the temp goes up some. It has been in the mid 30's in the mornings here so it's quite cold for them.

Yes but I believe in early preparedness.

I'm wanting to get some appenzeller spitzhaubens

& there is a wait list that will be implemented in Jan or so.

Hopefully the girls will start laying around Feb.

I think The Feed Barn had a pair of Appenzeller Spitzhaubens when we were there Friday morning; at least that is what they looked like. Might want to check with them, and then you could make your own ApZ chicks

Thanks Sonoran!

I called them and she did have a couple of hens - I kinda like the fuzzybutt stage though.

I might have to make the feed barn a stop on the tour next Saturday!
