Arizona Chickens

Often pasty butt is caused by over heating, low protein, stress(usually from shipping), and sugar water(some people give this to their chicks I am not sure why) and that can also cause it. ( I learned this from the old timers.)

Best way I've used to take it off is warm, wet cloth. Be patient it can take awhile. If its really stubborn then try soaking them in just enough warm water to cover the poo. Once its gone dry on low heat, low setting of blow dryer. They love it.

Last bit of advice. Stay on top of it, check each chick daily. I've heard people on here who didn't and wound up losing chicks because of it.

Edited 'cause when I write while I'm sleepy I don't make much sense.

Is there anyone in Northern Arizona with hens for sale?

I have 2 roos and 4 hens, all are 9 month old EEs. They are all pets...I'm talking spoiled, cuddly, peck you if you don't hug them, pets.

Until recently the roos have gotten along very well, but lately they have been fighting everyday. My husband and I can't bear the thought of killing one, or watching them beat each other up so we thought we'd add to the flock.

If all else fails, is there anyone out there who would like to adopt one of my beautiful baby boys?

Anybody know about ducks? The two baby runner ducks we got, If what I was told is true they are 6 weeks old this week. But they have all their feathers now or at least most of them. Are they really older than 6 weeks or is this about right?

Hopefully you are on their good side! You have been serving them fresh made hot meals and keeping the climate control set appropriately, right?

They came over after lunchtime, and it's not yet time for dinner, but yes, it will be offered. This is a new experience for me; I've done all the building on all the other coops except the original coop, which had a number of generals and very few worker bees--it never turned out quite like I (or any of hte other "generals") had envisioned, but has worked well for nearly 12 years. It spent too many of those flat on the ground during irrigation, so I really need to replace it...but not yet.

Congrats AzKat!

That is very impressive that a coop could last 12 years. I didn't make sense earlier...I meant I hope you are on your chickens good side. I didn't want them aiming at you!

I PMed you with some information of a guy who raises birds here. He's really great and I believe he has some available right now.

Hey my fellow az chicken lovers. So I finally moved to a part of phoenix where I am allowed to have roosters. I have five silkie pullets and one roo, then I have three lovely bantam cochin girls, the silkies are all 3 month olds. So before I have a set in his way silkie roo, I was hoping to add a nice bantam cochin roo to my flock. Does anybody have a roo they may want to rehome? Or can anyone point me in the best directon of someone who might have banty cochins? I never thought it would be as difficult as it has been to find a roo. I thought everyone was always trying to get rid of them.
