yes, she does look like mahonri's bw hennies. i have one bw left from his eggs after the ratbirds came thru and dropped their filth in my yard and killed off 3 bw ameraucanas from dar. but i still have a wheaten and a splash. i am so sorry chris.

Thank you. They are beautiful chickens. That is why I would love a couple more. DH hates those ratbirds. Found out that one of our neighbors feeds them and I now find them in my front yard. If they come in our backyard, DH will take care of them for sure. Am sorry for your loss also. You take such care to keep them healthy and it's those darn outsider birds that make the girls ill.

Wow. Where to start? I used to live in coastal Washington and went to a couple of BYC gatherings there. We had a pretty large flock of assorted chickens, ducks and pheasants. Also three of the sweetest goats you ever saw!
My Cuckoo Maran were my favorites. They were from great bloodlines and gave us some of the greatest dark eggs. Fast forward to now. I'm now in Tucson. No room for chickens :-( . BUT, I have a co-worker in Marana who has a nice flock of mix breeds. We have decided to go in together on raising some larger meat breeds (no Cornish X's). And I can have some Maran there for eggs!! I'm so excited. I've also decided that, after my lease is out in July, I'm going to start looking for a place on an acre around Picture Rocks or further south. Then I'm getting goats again.
I'd like to hatch the Maran chicks myself so I'm doing research now, bringing myself up to date on the Maran world.
So good to see so many chicken people here.

Welcome Sherrie!

New from Chandler. I was told in a previous post that I should join this thread. I'm glad I did. I have 2 Americaunas, a Light Brahma and a Buff Brahma. All just turned 4 weeks old yesterday. They are living in my garage in a tote with a heat lamp. I am in the process of painting and getting the coop ready to put them in in the next 2-3 weeks.

Glad you found us! Be certain to take pics of your birds and post them here!!! (I think I'm the one who told you to be certain your coop has LOTS of shade!)

So who knows what causes consistant double yolkers?
I have an EE that has laid a double every other day, for about 9 days now.
I dont think its feed, as the other 14 eggs I got today, and each of the past days are normal.
previously I would get a double EE about once a month, and now its has been consistant every other day.. and I am pretty sure it is the same girl.
here are 3 of them with FBCM/BWA/Icelandic eggs for comparison.

Wow Boston, those ought to make some yummy omlettes. Those are the EEs I got from Meg so maybe she knows why they are so prolific.

Moved 2/3rds of the NYD chicks from the Laree brooder to the grow out pen. They are all much more comfortable now.

And the booted SFH seems to be doing MUCH better.

I left 9 in the Laree brooder, including the Lav. Am, SFH, #29 and the 3 candidates to be the other SFH... (they could be Icelandics too) as well as the purebred Wheaten Am... and I'm thinking it's a pullet

... I really wanted a roo.

All of the others in the grow out pen are doing good. 5 Chipmunk Icelandics, 4 whitish Icelandics, a black Icelandic, 4 FBCMs and a goodly number of EEs, including my bargain black EE... but it's looking rooish.

I've been watching the 49ers and the Saints and it looks like SF is going to win this unless Breeze can be protected and then kick it in gear. Can't wait to watch Tebow vs. Brady tonight.

So, I'm headed up the mountain and then I'll get Sunday dinner ready for the oven. I hope it doesn't rain like it's forecast to do.
Have a great evening y'all.

Hi All- I have 4 two week old chicks in their brooder. They keep emptying the little mason jar feeder thats in their box. I am having to fill it up every day for the past 3 days, as it looks like all of the chick starter is in a pile next to the feeder or scattered around it. ANy suggestions on why they are doing this or how to prevent this from continuing? Thanx!
