Arizona Chickens

Sorry about the peepers, Mikey, but don't let it ruin your day.. These things happen.. Congrats on your first egg, and the arrival of your chicks that are doing good... Will

Thanks Becky, Nova & Loco.

I hate to say it but #4 died overnight.

2 more rickety ones left.

It's nothing a few years of thereapy won't fix

And because I took an hour to submit this 'cause Selina just picked up her two happy bouncy Ideal 236's

#5 passed away.

Happy, happy for itsredcandy!

The rest seem to be doing OK. One is a bit less lively than the rest but still vertical.

Boy I'm really glad this didn't happen with my first batch.

I might not have chickens now if this would have been my first experience.

I think the banties have a hard time traveling.
I just got back from dropping my rooster at a hobby farm. They had chicks delivered yesterday and they had 3 or 4 little banties die also. I don't know what kind they were but they were cream colored with feathers on their legs.

Bill (the rooster) seemed to be doing well when we left. There are so many chickens there he may just fly under the radar for awhile. We released him in the very large coop among some pullets that were about the same age. They all seemed to be getting along just fine. I wonder what will happen when he ventures out into the yard where the big roosters are.
Chickens are so funny. He jumped straight from the cage to the roost because he didn't want to step on the wire floor. I had to take him off the roost and put him near the food and water so he knew where that was. He literally didn't want me to put him down. He kept his feet up and just looked at the wire. Once down he strutted among the pullets like he belonged there and the pullets acted the same way.

Mikey D- That is aweful. I would call Ideal and at least they may refund your money. Was it the app spitz that died? If so I don't need all 6. just let me know.

On a happy note...The poultry show is Feb 11th and I am driving 4.5 hours to go to it. We should have a meeting place or a certain color of shirt to wear (or mikey's BYC gang sign) so we know who each other is. Who all is going??

Yes, unfortunately it was the app spitz. I'm sure Ideal will do something. The site says if a couple die they'll refund.

I don't know if 5 of 12 is a couple, & I've only 1 roo instead of 2.

Problem is even if they say, "sure we'll mail you out another box", I'll have to have 2 brooders running until they are close enough in size that it won't matter.

Let's give it another day or so & we'll figure out how to split up what's left.

Overall I'm still happy about the new peepers & One Dot is laying but...Uggg.

Mickey ... My heart and thoughts are with you.

I know how heart breaking it is to nurture a little bird and have it not make it. Glad for the good news of your dot laying though

Chicken wire will usually not keep 4-legged predators out. It is good at keeping chickens in. Rays Feed Store in South Phoenix (Baseline and 7th Avenue) sells wire 1/2 x 1 and 1 x 2 welded wire by the foot with several different roll widths at pretty reasonable prices. I do not know of anywhere else you can purchase it by the foot. Lowes sells some of the same as well as 1x1 in small rolls.

Coyotes can easily jump over much higher than a 5' wall. I've been told that they could scale my 8' walls.
