I got a bag of alfa pellets, however I found that I have to smash them up to get something that they can eat. Poor babies wanted to eat them. Thank you, I never thought of just a bale.

I am so new to having chickens in he desert, I'm so glad that I found you all on this web page.

You will learn so much on this site.

I am waiting until the end of April to hatch eggs. My DS and I will be at the Pima County Fair from 4/16-4/26/09, so I wouldn't be home to keep an eye on the chicks. I have 2 broody hens now, hopefully, I'll have a couple when I need them.

Good luck with your babies!!!

I grow greens for my chickens. I sprout different grains and seeds for them on a daily basis. I grow a couple patches of grass for them to have a nice time scratching it all up. I throw some wheat grains on the ground and use a rake to cover them a bit, and keep the area moist, and in a few days you have a nice little lawn going.

I also pick dandelion leaves for them. If you have a local restaurant, you can ask for vegetable trimmings. Those are a few ways to get them the fresh greens they like to eat.

I also found when I would spill some of the alfalfa pellets from my horses, if I wet them a little the chickens would go to town on them. I'm sure it's the same as mashing them, but a little easier!

Just don't let them sit wet for too long or they will get moldy, but I never had a problem with that, because my girls would have them gone in no time.

Rebbetzin - Thanks for the idea about sprouting them! I can't believe I haven't thought of that. I've accidently sprouted scratch before and it was super easy. That is a great idea for green. I'm enjoying it right now, because we have so much grass and weeds in our yard right now that I don't have to do anyting extra for them in the greens department! I love Spring!!!!!

Oh yeah... Welcome Tonopah Pati and kyliescoop... Have you become addicted to the site yet?

Good Morning all,
I am so happy that I found BackYardChickens. You have all giving me some great tips for getting greens for my girls.
I grow a pot of grass for my cat Jack, it has several types of grains in it. I will try out a patch for my chicks. I also found when the pellets got wet my big girls jumped right on them. I will try some for the babies. I am having so much fun with my chicks, I am retired so I can spend lots of time watching their progress. I am like a new mother showing my photos of them. Thank you all again.

We belong to a poultry club who has shows a few times per year.
The big show is Thanksgiving weekend at the Pima County Fairgrounds.

Sometimes the shows/events are advertised on Craigslist under farm and garden.

Or there is a newspaper, The Poultry Press, that advertises shows all over the country. If you belong to the APA (American Poultry Association) for the ABA (American Bantam Association), I believe shows are posted on their websites.

If I hear of any upcoming shows, I'll post them on here.

Good luck!!

Hello all!!!

This is my first post on this website, I do not have any chickens ... yet! But I will!

My previous experience has been with Easter/fair chicks, one I raised had started to get feathers in and was doing great ... then I put him in a patch of grass so he could start getting used to the outdoors ... and he died right then and there.

Do not know what happened. But I know I have it in me to raise chicks!

Anywho, I will probably be a lurker around here for a while, since I am currently looking for a new house, we live in the North valley but want to move to Mesa, so I can't get chickens until we get a new house. So, my plan goes like this:

1.- Get a new house
2.- Convince DH to let me keep chickens
OR
2.- Completely ignore his protests and do it anyway

So I have time to plan everything out. I have been researching like crazy about coops, brooders, breeds, etc. because I want to make sure I know what I am doing before I start. So here I am! I just spent 2-3 days reading through this whole post and it has some great info!!

I am looking forward to one day soon joining in the AZ BYC-ers flock!
