Arizona Chickens

So how are everyones chickens holding up in this weather? It actually snowed on us at the Renaissance Festival today! BRRRRRRR!!!!!

I have a yard full of happy soggy chickens!

One of the Black Australoprs was hiding under something & when I went outside (during a clearing) I couldn't find her anywere.

I went inside and told Tammy I thought we had lose one. She came outside and the soggy, wet hen came trotting up!

Yeah, we don't have a chicken run, they just go all over our property at their leisure. Did any of the chickens decide to play in the rain? Just the red and black stars. Everyone else high tailed it up the ramp and into the coop, fast! LOL! They seem to be afraid of the rain, what a bunch of chickens!

Found out today I need to make some modifications on the back end of my roof on my grow out pens.

I need to put on some flashing and a 16 foot rain gutter that empties into my oleanders.

Of course it hasn't rained here since when?, October or before?

Got 9 eggs today and the girls spent most of the day in the coop, out of the wet and cold.

We lost 2 of our 4 week olds this morning. Some how the tarp that was suppose to keep everything dry got flipped up and the chicks were wet and cold. Have I mentioned how much I hate the wind? 3 others were very week but quick thinking by DW saved them. Can't even tell which 3 it was anymore.

so after fearing the wind it got worse. the power went out. I wasnt even thinking becuase I was trying to get two uncooperative girls ready for church when I remember my incubators. AUGH......called DH and a power line had been blown down on the highway about a mile down. I had about 5 eggs that had pipped and 5 that were still wet, not to mention 2 incubators full of eggs!! So I got the girls in the can an loaded 3 incubators into the minivan and headed to church, unloaded them all and brought them to my class of 18- 3 year olds. I didn't know what else to do... the temps were crashing. It was pretty funny walking in the back door with all the little kids carring one incubator after another. What i wont do for my chicks and eggs. glad to report that the all hatched out and the temps are now back to normal. The water in the incubator spilled so the humidity is high but I opened all the vents and hopefully that will get under control soon!
That must have been a interesting sight to see, great thinking though. Glad everyone is ok. DW just got called to be the nursery leader 2 weeks ago so I can kinda see what you went through.

Mikey - Sorry, no way can I catch up on the last 8000-ish posts but I wanted to agree that flushing the eye with sterile saline solution a few times a day won't hurt and may help. I don't remember what your chick's eye looked like, but for my hen, we ended up with opthalmic drops that made a difference almost immediately. Our vet put her on "Neomycin and PolymyxinB sulfates and Dexamethasone Opthalmic Suspension" (from the box), 3x per day. The Rx label says "Neo Poly Dex drops." I actually think I might have been prescribed these for myself at one point. I don't see anything that says it is a vet scrip. If you get Doc Tracy it might be worth a shot if she can give you prescription for it.

Good luck!

Hola! Does anyone in Tucson happen to have a Buff Silkie chick that they'd be willing to sell? I don't think that our flock would be complete without one!

My chickens loved the rain. They were out almost all day and it barely stopped raining here. They were up when the sun was still down this morning, waiting to get let out. They've been foraging for worms and bugs all morning. They did take breaks in the coop but for the most part they spent their time out eating. I have a heat lamp in the coop for them and the wind for the most part stays off them when they are on the roosts.

Kev- Sorry to hear about your 4 week olds.

Mikey - I hope you can get Blinkies eye remedied.

Nova - Did you get pics of the snow?
