Arizona Chickens

Hi Folks!

And the continuing saga of Mikey's sickos:

I've got runny noses now.

The vaporizer is now on a block on the floor of the pen - I'm adding 1 ox of Oxine to 3/4 gal of water and it is in their face

(It is running near 24 hours a day)

The antibiotics are in the water. - I'm mixing right around 800 mg per gal (1/2 oz per gallon)

The roo with the bad eye is getting Gintramicine 3 - 4 x a day (now in both eyes)

I'm going to get these birds healed up!

haha, thanks for asking. actually we went and bought a filet kit (on clearance at wally world) and processed 4 this afternoon. we chose the skinning option and i think it went pretty well. took the longest time on the first, learning where to make all the cuts and so forth. all total, 2 hours and lots of learning experience. i am proud of myself, a little amazed that i did it.

going to dust the coop tomorrow and worm the girls next week, getting everything in order for when they start to lay - which hopefully will be SOON. oh, quick question for everyone. is it ok to worm pre-emptively, or should we wait until we need to?
Oh I wanted to learn the skinning method. I tried skinning our one roo after it had been in the fridge for a day, I didn't fair so well. I don't know if the chilling had something to do with it or if it was more along the lines that I had no clue what I was doing.

Hopefully the blowing it in their face thing will do the trick.

I ordered you a bottle of the denagard and oxine if you want it, if not no big deal either. Should be here tomorrow if all goes well.

If you wait until you KNOW you have worms, there is already a very bad infestation. Would you wait until your dog had heartworm to give meds?
i kinda thought that but wasnt sure so decided to ask. i didnt think it was similar to heartworm, i'm just trying to ward off whatever ickies the wild birds might bring to my flock. thanks for the input, i will definitely worm them before there is a problem.

Quote: i learned it basically by reading and watching youtube videos. i guess you need to skin the bird within 15 minutes of death that way everything is still pliable. not positive, but i think i read that somewhere ?? my mom said it was much faster and cleaner than plucking - no smell either. but i wont be able to roast these birds, or make good stock, without the skin. thats ok by me. first time, learned a lot, i'm happy.

Mikey D: i guess i havent been reading the thread long enough, how did your birds become sick? if you point me to the post number i'll look it up so you dont have to repeat yourself. i hope everything turns out well.

I couldn't find the post # if I had to

I've been doing battle with a series of eye infections & now runny nostrils for about 4 weeks now.

Of 19 chicks - 2 got better & I had to put 2 down. One more has the bad eye thing, one is seemingly healthy but won't eat and is weak as a kitten - a few more have crusties around their nostrils. I've tried isolating & treating but to no avail.

They are all getting the max dose of Duramycine in their water for (another) 10 days and a disinfectant / water treatment chemical called Oxine in a vapor form.

I'm going to give them to the end of the treatment & pray they all get better!

This sounds an awful lot like what my chickees had a few weeks ago. I only gave antibiotics to one and it didn't seem to make much of a difference. It seemed to run it's course through the whole flock with varying degrees of crustiness and sneezing. I didn't lose any, but was worried for a bit about "crusty." I think the whole thing took about 4-5 weeks to get through everyone.

Good luck, Mikey, I hope they get better soon!
