Arizona Chickens

Just created my account. I live in Gilbert AZ and wanted to Say Hi.

We have had our four chickens for just over a year. Wanting to get more soon.

David

Hi Brenda,
I'm still in the planing stages for our BYC project, we are also in Gilbert. I have been trying to research what if any new amendments to the restrictions have been proposed or enacted to ease our ability to keep them. Saw your post while I was poking around, wondered if you heard anything new ? I've been told I have to have a letter "P" designator next to our location on their map. We live amidst the usual sea of tile, have a big garden and can't wait to get the chickens going. Just hens no roosters, only want the eggs and to enjoy the birds. Hope your operation is going well, need all the help and advice I can get from fellow BYC readers.

Thank you
Dave

Welcome David and Dave. This is a great bunch of chicken lovers that are full of knowledgable information. I am also new to the whole chicken keeping thing. I have 10 chickens (2 are laying and the other 8 are maturing) and live in Southeast Mesa. I have had chickens for a little over 2 months and enjoy them a whole lot.

My Chicks are outside for the first time! Love the Sun!

Silky experts. Please tell me the color of the chick in the for front of the these two pictures. The camera got the true color.

Goodness gracious, you just can't catch a break.

tell me about it.. i think I had/have coryza in some of my LF Light brahma babies.... WOW!!! Treated them with I think its called sulmet or so. For 2 days straight then gave them 3 day rest then treated them again for 2 days. not sure if I was supposed to do that, but I wasn't sure if they got enough meds the first round. Hopefully. Everyone is a lot spunkier ( unfortunately I did have to put 2 down early on ). now I have one thats got the watery/droopy eye. What is the eye med that I am supposed to get for this one? totally forgot.

Then both my girls have been throwing up since 3pm yesterday, so going on 24+ hrs NO SLEEP... wooo hooooo. let the fun begin.
Never ending cycle it seems..

And then I get a phone call early this morning from a lady that has been looking for over a year for a pure splash baby and I sold her my last one a week ago. Well she was sobbing cuz hubby accidently let dog out and got the baby. So I told her I would see if I could find one for her. Weird is when yesterday a father was calling on behalf of his little daughter that her baby frizzle she got form me got squished when something blew over on it. So they are coming out to pick up another one.. Wow.. Its not a full moon or anything right?

So question is, does anyone have a "possible" young silkie splash pullet they are willing to part with? please let me know.

thnx

Interesting I read stories about dogs Killing chickens. My dog loves the chickens. She will stand right next to them and eat chicken food with them.
Once in a while I see her give them a good chase for fun. LOL

What is this eye infection that seems to be spreading around the forum? Does anyone know what it is and what is causing it? What treatment method has worked best? I'm thinking of keeping meds on hand just in case. This is a scary epidemic.

Just a quick note before I dash out again, for those who ordered oxine and denagard it's here. Small problem is I am not. I will be at a class that usually runs till 9 however it is suppose to be shorter tonight. Anyhow if you want to come tonight my wife will be here regardless if not then we can plan for a delivery/pickup later.

I've got some Easter Egger's, and a Rhode Island Red and Buff Orpinton, all pullets, that are currently three months. I was planning on putting them on CL when they get to point of lay, but if any BYCers are looking to expand their flock, let me know. I've also got a really pretty Silver Laced Wyandotte that I'd like to rehome. She's two, and more of a looker than a layer (I'm getting 2-3 eggs a week) and I'd like to make room for some of the younger birds.

IMHO, treatment for such things as coryza, respiratory things, IB, etc, all need to be culled for the health and welfare of The rest of the flock. I don't mess around with that type of thing. I will treat for parasites and cocci, oh, and bumblefoot.

I do care about my birds a great deal and this is why I chose to handle it this way. I am not a vet, I cannot cure them, I practice good biosecurity and that's the best I can do.

For those of you that haven't, you should read speckled hen's 10 comandments.
