Arizona Chickens

Mikey- answer about the web cam. We had a HooToo IR camera and hubby just opened an account on ustream.com. Ours is not wireless.

Did your gal with the eye troubles look like this in the beginning? (This is Mama to be Gretchen) I noticed this when I got home from work today. I brought her in the house and cleansed the area.It is slightly swollen and puffy. Hard to tell in this photo. I am hoping that it just was an irritation from dust bathing as she was full of sand. Otherwise any recommendations if it gets worse on how to treat?

Any comments from everyone would be helpful. Thanks

They started with a weepy eye, like they were tearing. They're eye's started closing and a white / milky puss was coming out when I opened it. Is smelled like an infection - not a dead animal.

Probably 2-4 days between onset and when the eye got so bad it closed. No white discharge until the eye closed. I thought it was irritation at first also - that's why I ignored it at first.

There were some that I did not catch until the eye was closed. None of those lived. The ones I caught while they were just tearing made it.

Prayers that it is just an irritation!

on the rt side of the photo is enclosed has some chicken wire on it looks like it was used for calves or goats before.. i just moved out here and want to get sme chickens.. wondering if i put more chicken wire on the sides and top of this built some laying boxes place them off the ground & on the side w doors or something.. would that work.. it does have a metal siding shadded area in it..

Welcome to the addiction Neh57!

Ventilation and shade are keys - misters will help them in the heat.

Regular hexagonal chicken wire will be torn through by coyotes etc.. You might think about going heavier.

Can you do math?

Hey we had a new visitor. Remember last week when I posted a Gopher Snake that we saw in the yard. Well now we have this lovely Bull Snake! Last year just before winter I caught a stunning King Snake! I feel blessed to have them. So far the chicks are safe from them. No worries there.

5lbs of meat on my extra Marans Rooster and he did have some long hairs that had to be singed off. But this is the weird thing. We called him Testosterone because he developed a huge comb and was crowing long before the other cockerels.

WARNING BUTCHERED CHICKEN PARTS PIC IS NEXT......NOT REALLY GRAPHIC, BUT DON'T WANT ANYONE UPSET.

That Cockerel had the biggest boy parts I have seen yet

I would have a coronary if I found a snake like this or even a 6 inch snake in my yard.

Female ducks rarely ever fight. I have even had 2 females sit on the same nest at the same time!!! Right now I actually have a female muscovy, a jungle fowl hen and a royal palm turkey all sitting on the same nest at the same time!!!

I think it would be great if you got your other duck a friend and adopting one from a rescue is awesome!!! I had no idea there was a poultry rescue. Can you share the information on who , what, and where it is? Thanks and good luck!!!

Has anyone used a product called "Hot Pick" to stop chickens from pecking? One of my chickens (a Light Brahma) has a little blood on her neck. It is either on the neck skin or what I thought may be part of her lower waddle. It is pretty red. Hard for me to tell because she is about 19 weeks old and her waddles and comb are starting to get redder and redder. It has obviously been bleeding though because I can see traces of blood on her surrounding feathers. Anyway it looks like it has scabed over a bit. I put triple antibiotic ointment on it and sprayed her with a few squirts of Hot Pick (it was recommended from the guy at Ace Hardware which was the only place open last night). I did this because I noticed while I was examining her abrasion one of my other chickens pecked at that very spot. I am going to go to Higley Feed on my way to work today and buy some Blu-kote. I was just wondering if Hot Pick would stop the pecking. I have never noticed any pecking prior to this. I know that chickens are attracted to red and blood and hope that is an isolated case. Just don't want the wound to get worse.
