Arizona Chickens

Those chicks are adorable. Getting ansty for my chicks to get cracking. The broody is still sititng tight. I am really surprised she is doing so well, since she is a first timer. DH reports she threatened to "destroy you, small human" when he checked her water & food.

I am feeling better than expected, so cross your fingers I can convince the DH to go to the show.

I have eggs from my Delaware (lays a dark brown egg), my black star hen (medium brown egg) and my cinnamon queen.. (light brown eggs)
Who are in with the Golden Cuckoo Maran roo. As you know, I got 5 chicks from my Delaware eggs... all pullets.. and they all look like GC Marans. I imagine that they will be dark layers.

Do you want me to save you some of their eggs??

I imagine by June I'll be getting eggs from my FBCMs... I've already picked the roo I'm going to keep .

You know what?? You just reminded me that I do have one of your delaware/marans eggs! That one is developing just fine. Well, as long as it isn't a rooster, I will have one!! Yay!

I may just take you up on that egg offer. Let me think on it. I may decide to wait until your BCMs start to lay.

congrats!! Sooo eggsiting!! I am on day... hmm. let's see... day 14! I go into lock down on - do I lock down on day 18 or 19?? Certainly by Wednesday morning!! Temps have been great! Very stable. Have not calibrated my hygrometer...yet. It has been between 20 and 25 this week. I think mine may be reading low. I have a bowl of water in there. I don't know how it could only be 20%. The bowl is right next to the light bulb. I will get that done. I will put it in the bag tonight and see what it says in the morning..

Has anyone see the movie, Over the Hedge? We love Hammy, the squirrel. Remember when he said, about the giant hedge, "Let's call it Steve!" Well, we have the one little Polish egg that is so much fun to candle cause we can see right in that white shell!! So we have been enjoying the little swimmer and we decided to "call it Steve!!"
Whether it is a pullet or cockerel, its name is Steve!! We think that's a stitch!

Hey NoSkivies!!

We homeschool, too!! Love your username!!

Mahonri Is my little rooster a wheaton or a blue wheaton? Do we know yet? Or do you know as the feathers come in? I don't know much about the genetics there, but he has some blue feathers coming in on his lower parts. We have gone ahead and put the three babies in with our two hens. They are pretty docile hens, but they are enjoying having some power over the little ones. We let them out to free range this evening, and they had fun. All going well, and their feathers are coning in so pretty!! Dd has named them after Roman/Greek gods. Roo is Jupiter/Zues (we'll see what his personality is like), pullets are Venus and Neptune.

Wish we were going to the poultry show tomorrow!! Maybe the next one. You all have tons of fun! Tell us all about it!

Hi Mahonri! Here you go (all three from wheaton eggs):

They're sleeping in the pic - I turned off the heat lamp to take the pic (red light) - they're doing great.

The chick that hatched last night looked hot today - had it's mouth open a little so I decided to take it out and get it a drink of water. It's only 100 degrees in the bator, but the chick couldn't get very far from the light and I didn't want to harm it by letting it get overheated. The other two chicks were fine because they were still wet, but I went ahead and removed all 3 of them. I have two humidifiers running in my bedroom for this hatch, so the humidity in the incubator didn't suffer when I quickly lifted the top (I don't take it all the way off).

I have 6 more pips now, including 2 from the cooler side of the bator - 1 looks like it's getting ready to zip - big chunks near the pip - actually, I just went in there and checked and a different egg is starting to zip.

I'm keeping the humidity between 60-65%.

Looks like I mismarked one of the eggs. The top chick had to have come from my Partridge EE, (Sunshine). The whitish one should be a BW, the yellow, a Wheaten.. we'll see how good I am a picking them!

Here is a pic of Sunshine... If it's a pullet, it should lay a blueish egg.

All of this talk about the different color eggs is making me wish the feed store had more variety left when I got there. I wonder if I brought a couple more home if a. my wife would put me out the house and b. could i just put them in with chicks that would be a week or so older. I got three RIR and three BR so I should have some brown and some light brown eggs but it would be cool to have some dark ones and some blue or green too.
