Arizona Chickens

i have been using these drinking cups for two years and have found that some breeds are just smarter than others. some picked it up real quick and others would surely die of dehydration. now, the muscovies have already got it down except their bills are a bit big to get all the way down in that cup so i have to keep lots of gallon jugs out still. must come up with another plan for watering the ducks.

Oh great! I was about to copy your system now your changing it?

You wouldn't change it unless it was a better setup right? Now I have to wait and see what you come up with.

Oh, I'm just tinkering with it. I'm pretty happy with it as it is, even though the nipples are too low and there are far more than necessary. I really like it because it's plumbed into the water system and is automatic. It's my insurance policy against dead chickens if something fails with the other two waterers. I have two bucket waterers with nipples like Mikey's, one in the run and one in the yard and they get used most because of where they are located. They seem to only use the one in the coop when they're locked up. I've always been intrigued by the watering cups and I think I want to try them out, so I think I'll hook one up to the cooler in the coop. At some point in the near future I have to run water to the new grapevine on the north side of the coop and I'll do it all then.

OOOOH! OOOH! One more thing. A few months ago I discovered a fantastic way to plumb through any container wall, e.g. 5-gallon bucket, cooler, pvc pipe, anything as long as it's less than 1/2" in thickness. It's called a Uniseal. They won't degrade in heat or cold, are good up to 40 psi, will never leak and are wickedly easy to install.

This morning and with out using any medicine Blue Bells eye is perfect! What gives! Can it be she just has a weak eye and the sun irritates it during the day? She likes to free roam. I want to be able to put her back with her friends but was worried the eye thing would be catchy.

That's good to hear! It was terribly windy here the past couple of days, was it windy there? Maybe dust in the air is aggravating it? I hope it's something simple like that.

She sounds like such a great bird.

Thanks for all the help with ACV.
I have got a big problem with my Blue Bell. For two weeks now I have been fighting a eye infection. Thought I had it licked but she is now coming back with it. I have applied Achromycin to eye twice a day and in her water Duramycin-10. Anything different I should be doing to kick this? She had this same thing real bad 6 months ago also. Last time her side face was red and puffy. This time I caught it early but haven't been able to kick it completely. Here is pictures I took this evening. I have isolated her again.

Holy crapuls Fuzzy. Is it leaking too?

Really hope is is not what my chickens had.

Tylan is $10 a bottle + syringes...

Quote: You know, the same thing happened to me at first with the nipples. I could not get them to use them and it was around May and getting hot. It worried me so I waited until the fall. Early one morning I took all their other water sources away. About two hours after they came down from the roost I sat outside the coop with a long stick I used to poke at the nipples. Since they were more motivated (thirsty) and also wondering why I wasn't letting them out, I had their attention. It took a couple of sessions that day but they eventually picked it up. Since then I've raised chicks with nipples from the get-go, it's easier. However, I'm getting ready to re-do the watering system in the coop again and I'm thinking about using a drinking cup. Please gold plate an extra for me.

What is your motivation to go from nipples to cups?

I am under the impression that the cups are going to get filled with dirt/dust/yuck where the nipples are pretty much maintenance free.
