I just called the number and they said Yuppers anywhere in the state. I am bringing my birds! I need some ribbons to prove I'm not the only one who thinks I have great birds

You can try the APA (american poultry association) or ABA (american bantam association) for standard information. I'm not sure if they have that on their websites, or not. But they sell the standards in both hard and soft cover books.

Good luck!

My DS and I will be showing some of our birds there. As a matter of fact, we will be camping there for 10 days, since my DS will be showing for 4-H, too.

See ya there!

We're in Mesa. My husband and sons are building a coop. We'd like to get some Buff Orpington and Red Star chicks, but we're having trouble finding them.

I spoke to someone at Mesa Feed Barn this afternoon and he said that they have some coming in on Thursday (the one day we won't be able to get down there), but it sounded as if he had no idea what breeds they were getting in and that they'd go really fast. We're on a quarter acre so we need quiet birds and we'd like them friendly.

I also tried to call C&C in Queen Creek, but the voicemail inbox was full and I couldn't leave a message.

We considered ordering from McMurray, but their minimum order is 25 chicks and we can only have 10, so we'd need to find folks to go in with us and order together, or try to sell them later.

Any ideas on where to get Buff Orpington and Red Star chicks?

Thanks!

Lynne

Call the Western Ranchman on 32nd Street and Paradise Lane. They always have chicks and a different breed every time I'm there.

They are also the cheapest for feed that I've been able to find, I called Rays, the Feedstore in Tempe, Pratts.. the only place I didn't go was the feedlot at Adobe and 20th because it was so far away.

BOs are nice because they are so docile.
Red Stars are great because they lay often and LARGE eggs... but you'll want some EEs or Ameraucanas.

Just hatchery, not show. And we're only allowed hens in the city.

Red Stars are sex links. McMurray lists them as their own breed and I'm new enough at this that I'm not sure what 'production reds' means. I think they're beautiful and reviewers say they're quiet, gentle, friendly, and do well in Texas heat, so I thought they'd do well here, too.

We're a fairly quiet, laid back family and these two breeds seemed like they'd be a good fit for us.

Thanks for these tips! My husband drives around the city and state quite a bit for work. He should be able to fit it into his schedule without taking an extra trip.

Don't forget the feed store in Black Canyon City. They combine the orders of their customers until they get a big enough order to call in. So you can order 2 chicks if you want. She will just put it in the order and when the chicks come in, you pick them up. This way, you will get the exact number of chicks that you want and exactly the breed you want.
Frankly, after dealing with sick/dying chicks from a feed store, I don't think I would buy chicks from any other feed store. You just don't know what you are bringing home.
I know that is quite a distance for you coming from Mesa, but if the other feed stores that Mahonri mentioned aren't too far, BCC is only 15 more minutes up the freeway. It is Sanders Ranch Supply.
I know I have mentioned the store before. Have any of you ordered from them?

And what is the deal with Pratt's? Are they involved in, or in any way supporting cock fighting? They are so willing to take roosters if you need to get rid of them. There are rumors...

Wow! Its nice to see so many people in AZ. We're going to be moving to Mesa in June, and are going to start the chicken raising adventure in August/September.
I've been reading this thread with great interest, and am glad to see so many great tips for keeping the chickens happy and healthy in the heat.
