Arizona Chickens

I went out to pet one of my ducks tonight. He wasn't in the mood to cuddle, so I had to catch him first. Mumbia, my adorable and super friendly black star hen, came running over to me. She was on a mission! I was confused at first...then I realized that she was trying to protect me from the duck I was trying to catch! LOL!!! She thought the duck was fighting me, so she was putting the smack down on the poor duck! I let him go quickly and started to laugh so hard! Mumbia was super proud of herself! She was so pleased with herself for protecting me. SOOO CUTE!!!

Hello fellow Arizonans!
big_smile.png
I received an invitation from Gallo de Cielo to come a join you (thanks again). I'm so excited to find other backyard chicken owner's in AZ.

I'm in Phoenix and just in the planning stages. I have an area picked out and now I'm looking at coops and potential hens. We are only interested in raising hens for eggs/pets right now.

Any tips on coops and heat-hardy birds would be much appreciated. I did find this coop on Craigslist and was considering it because hubby may never get around to building me one (a long run would be added).

In my humble and limited opinion...

It has 2 strikes against it - (3 & 4 if you count it is made of OSB (particle board) and it is unpainted)

  • The chicken wire will keep chickens in and birds out but not a determined medium size predator.

  • The bottom has zero ventilation & this is where the chickens will be during the day.

Just my 2 cents...

Very nice.. I did want more silkies.. 2 of them died.. One is on her last breath as i am typing this.
Bummer.. And sad for our family.. They were sick from the get go.. I bought them from a local feed store.. I am praying that the two silkies will not get our others sick.. Some times it is hard
For me to get online.. Router issues.. So email me any advice, it is easier to read on my
phone than this site.. Now im off to start building their [email protected]
So sorry to hear about your losses

Stay away from feed store chicks & chickens - from the mouth of the AZ State vet.

i've read on here about proper little chicken patients behaving nicely staying in the shower, or even for hours in a kitchen sink. why is it then that i end up with this?

at least she's feeling well enough to fly...

@ 32' per second/ per second the poo will be traveling at about 5-1/3 feet per second when it hits the tub!

(This of course does not include any initial velocity she imparts to the poo!)

X2 no ventilation on bottom and you will be doomed before you get started. If you could take that bottom panels off you will be ok and maybe add a run to it. Its way to small to keep them in that small of a space all the time . you could look on the coop forum and get some remodling ideas before you get your chicken.

Hi City Farm,
Sorry to hear about your silkies. Its a very hard lesson to learn but remember to ALWAYS QUARANTINE new birds to the flock for 30 days or until each bird has a clean bill of health the once over, before adding to your flock so you dont risk loosing to diseases, lice, mites ect. This goes for most animal breeding. If you can always separate ANY sick animal from the others because most of the time they can and will passs it on. PS happy tractor building and dont forget to share photo when your done :)

Hahahahahahah....this is what I was worried about when I brought my EE in to recover from scorpion sting. She remained the perfect little patient unlike your girl. Is she a sussex?

Thank you, this is just the feedback I needed.

Sorry if this has been asked and answered on this thread, but does anyone here have ducks in Phoenix? I'm in Nebraska right now, but we are seriously thinking about moving to Phoenix and I would love to take my babies. My main concerns are (1) the heat (2) water- would it be too expensive or impractical to have waterbirds in the desert? (3) Housing or city rules- my ducks are technically illegal here, but no one cares. What is the situation in Phoenix? (4) How do you keep them out of the pool?!

Thanks!!!
