Very nice.. I did want more silkies.. 2 of them died.. One is on her last breath as i am typing this.
Bummer.. And sad for our family.. They were sick from the get go.. I bought them from a local feed store.. I am praying that the two silkies will not get our others sick.. Some times it is hard
For me to get online.. Router issues.. So email me any advice, it is easier to read on my
phone than this site.. Now im off to start building their [email protected]

spending time with the flock this morning i had a chick with mud balls on her toes. she was walking all funny, the mud had hardened and i'm sure it was awkward for her. that i took care of pretty easily.
then noticed my favorite hen limping - the dreaded bumblefoot so i took her in the house to soak her feet. 2 hours later i still cant get the plug out. i gave up - it was horrid. i'm sitting there thinking i cant get this out and its hurting her with me digging around and i cant see cuz i am miserably crying cuz i'm feeling so sorry for myself and her. all i got accomplished was the scab off and she has very clean feet now from all the soakings. but the plug is in there, torn to bits apparently, cuz i'm not able to grasp anything.
so, she has first aid ointment and gauze wrapped crudely with waterproof first aid tape. am i going to have to cull her over stupid bumblefoot?

Hello fellow Arizonans!
big_smile.png
I received an invitation from Gallo de Cielo to come a join you (thanks again). I'm so excited to find other backyard chicken owner's in AZ.

I'm in Phoenix and just in the planning stages. I have an area picked out and now I'm looking at coops and potential hens. We are only interested in raising hens for eggs/pets right now.

Any tips on coops and heat-hardy birds would be much appreciated. I did find this coop on Craigslist and was considering it because hubby may never get around to building me one (a long run would be added).

Welcome!!!

I'm moving to my daughters new house (outside city limits !!! ) since my lease is up and I don't want to commit to anymore time here. I'm anticipating on finding MY place within a month or so. Which means another move but it is all good.

The fun thing is my daughter and her family want their own little laying flock now so I'm going to spend my time there building the "minimal coop" from the "Chicken Coops for Dummies" book (supposed to be delivered today) for them. Going to give it more ventilation I think. We are going to bring over a few of our laying hens from our friends house (where all my chickens are) so she will be all set up.

Gives me a chance to test this coop to see how it would be for breeding trios in individual runs.

Welcome all new members !!!

Exciting times ahead that's for sure

I would not worry for one.. You are a good mom!
Possibly some penicillin ? A friend said.. She has had chickens
for a long time.. You have done a good job of cleaning,
Are you suppose to pick off the scab? It will help it if
something is in her foot. Hang in there..

I think you'll well on your way to taking care of it. I don't know about bumblefoot for sure, but I know the infections that are similar in humans don't always have a nice core this early. You may have to wait a day or two and try again.

This morning sure went by quickly. I spent about four hours in the kitchen making strawberry syrup. Why, you might say? Well, 'cause there's nothing better than an ice cold strawberry club soda or strawberry lemonade to take the heat out of a warm day. The biggest shame amongst it all is that the hulls and meat is just going to be thrown away, unless there is someone in the Northwest Valley that wants to pick it up for your chickens... I made over a gallon and canned it for longer storage, so it did take a few hours. The time would easily be cut in half for cold storage and immediate use.

The recipe:
- 1 lbs. fresh strawberries
- 4 c. water
- 2 c. sugar

01.) Wash and hull the strawberries. Cut in to quarters, or slices if large.
02.) Place approximately 4 cups (1 pound) cut prepared strawberries in to a large saucepan.
03.) Cover with 4 cups water and turn heat to high. Once the water begins boiling, reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. The strawberries should be a mushy, pinkish color. The water should be a clear, dark red.
04.) Pour contents through a fine-mesh colander or sieve. You want only the clear, red liquid. The strawberry semi-solids can be discarded or, better yet, fed to your chickens with the hulls.
05.) Place the strawberry water back in to the pan and return to high heat. Add 2 cups of sugar and stir until dissolved.
06.) Bring to a boil and remove from heat. Place in glass jars for canning or a glass carafe for immediate use.

This can be refrigerated for approximately 2 weeks to be on the since it contains fresh fruit extract. It can be canned using the water bath method for a shelf-stable life of up to about a year.

For a delicious strawberry water or club soda...
- Fill glass about a quarter- to half-full with ice.
- Add approximately a quarter- to half-glass of strawberry syrup.
- Top of glass with a club soda for a traditional strawberry soda or use regular water for no carbonation.
- Drink cold and enjoy!

You can also add it to a pitcher of cold lemonade for an absolutely amazing strawberry lemonade that you will never find in stores.

Enjoy!
