Arizona Chickens

I bought a few chicks from Vanessa a few weeks ago. She is very non-nonsense and nice. I even petted a few of those meat chicks you all will be butchering. They were terribly adorable. I never thought I would find meaties appealing, but she grows them out slow with lots of space. Watching them waddle around was endearing, but I still thought, "Mmmmmm....Chicken nuggets."

Have fun!

Is Vanessa who runs this? :O
Every time I see broilers I think of that flavorful skin on a chicken after being carefully cooked since morning...
Plus thinking of gnawing on those wings! OMNOMNOM!

Well--i guess I sorta assumed it was the same lady I bought chicks from. Her name was Vanessa, I went to CC and Dynamite to get the chicks, and there were a hilarious # of pink & white bowling balls running (wabling like a fat kid in corderoys) around.

Edited: I was up all night, so I am going to try to get some sleep after the kids get shuffled off to school. However, if I am feeling better, I was thinking of heading over to the ostrich festival today. Anyone else?

My hens have basically quit laying. I got 6 today and only two were W/BW. I'll start saving tomorrow for Wednesday. (My day off next week) I'll do what I can.
I thought that you got three Ams? I DID have one EE that laid really blue... and I thought I always caught her eggs but apparently not. I've sold all of my EEs now with the exception of the Birchen EE and she lays DARK green so there is no mistaking her egg. The partridge EE & the White Blue Head EE &the white EE were sold with my Giant Partridge Cochin. The white Blue head is the one that laid really blue eggs. Any blue eggs I get now have to be from the W/BW Ameraucanas... can't be anything else.

I've watched the roo get successful almost every day now with the Polish... but I haven't had an egg from her in over a week. Figures.

I did get 3, but it was one of the W/BW that had the unabsorbed yolk sac and it died on day 3. Bummer. So, now I just have 2.

Wonder what is up with your hens? A poorly timed molt? I always thought I could give my family and neighbors eggs at Christmas time, but mine like to molt in December, so no egg gifts. Guess they have their own agenda.

"I told ya, they was organized!" (you have seen chicken run, right??)

This sounds great. I can butcher a chicken and have several times. What I need help with is the part where you go from live chicken to dead chicken. I have yet to have that part go real well. If this workshop included that part, then I am going!

Went to the Phoenix Permaculture Guild site. Wow! They have lots to offer. I may try to take advantage of some of the other programs as well.

HOLY CRUMBUM BATMAN!!!!

Onthespots' eggies are due tomorrow, so of course I am spending all sorts of time staring into the bator, looking for movement. I keep thinking I hear peeping, but have learned from experience it is just my sinuses messing with my head.

ANYWAY--I just spent ten minutes (with a high-powered flashlight) scrutinizing all the eggs due tomorrow, hearing imaginary peeps. All the sudden I see movement from the far end of the bator, in the egg turner. There is a chick, fully zipped, still in the egg, just swinging back & forth in the turner. WHAT THE FRENCH TOAST? It, and some other Aloha eggs are marked "23rd" NOT the "13th". What terrible accountant marked those eggs? Are they all marked incorrectly? What to do?

I moved it off the turner, ninja-style, and unplugged the turner. Now to turn the light on in the brooder!

BABIES!!

Well I mis-marked a whole batch of eggs too...I took them of the turn to soon--I was really wondering why they weren't hatching at all...so I just left them in the hatcher. Last night most of them hatched, the last few are hatching right now...I put the wrong date on them by 2 days. I am just glad that they are hatching.

So you are in good company...

Congratulations! That is soooo exciting! Cant wait to see pics of all the cute little babies. Wow, good thing you checked. It is a mystery, unless its a new breed that grows at an lightning speed.

I keep checking the date on mine, hoping that I got it right. The one under my broody is due next Tuesday. I sooo cant wait. I think there is only one egg that is viable. Oh well. I wasnt sure of the others and stuck them under her anyway.

And we have to get our new coop done by then so that her and the baby can have the old coop to themselves for a couple of days. Its a way to get my hubby's butt in gear

Otherwise I would try and do it myself and royaly mess it up, or so he would think

Speaking of pictures, check out this Aloha "reject". She is going to Cluckin'. I couldnt get a good picture, but this chick is developing buff tipped feathers on its shoulders and back. TOTALLY crazy, since it has always been B/W.

Here is a previous pic--#1
