Arizona Chickens

We have four hens and since I have moved a long distance due to a job, the rest of the family cannot care for all of them. We are keeping the California Grey and the Ameraucana. We are looking to rehome the white one and the brown one (Penelope and Gretchen). They are each just over one year old. We only want to send them to homes where they will be cared for as egg layers and not meat chickens. Since my wife is not really versed in handling them, please arrange for pickup in the evening after they have roosted and are easy to pick up.

We live in the Chandler, Arizona area, near Elliot and the 101. Please send me a PM if you are able to take them.

Ugh, so after getting the latest chick home, I noticed a problem with her vent area. Stupid me, I didn't check her as thoroughly as I should have. After handling literally dozens at that shop, this was the first one I have seen have any problems. It would be the one I chose. But having a baby in one hand that is oober excited and wants to grab her makes it a bit more difficult. Not an excuse, though.

I posted the information in this thread, but wanted to key in here, too, just for good measure. You all are awesome, so thoughts are appreciated. I hope I got all of the important keywords in it for it to help people later on, too.

Thanks in advance!

Here is what I answered on the other thread: "Looks okay to me. Prolapse typically occurs in hens or pullets who are laying, not chicks. I have never heard of a chick with prolapse. It is possible that missing feathers came off if "poopy butt" was pulled off, but all in all, I don;t see anything that looks out of the normal."

Thanks S.S. That's very good to hear. I'll still try to get a better photo later so that others can reference it if they come up with a similar question. Photos are always so much better than words.

DEMOSTHINE: Congrats on the chicks! Your chick looks fine, I agree with SS. It probably had pasty butt and they pulled the feathers off getting the dried poo off. She doesn't look prolapsed, red, or swollen. Just make sure the other chicks aren't pecking the area.

Another place to find chicks is PetFood Depot on cavecreek north of bell rd., also the FeedBarn, if you get them when they first arrive, located on lone mountain and the I-17.

It looks like I'll be doing the egg thing next time. The Stock Shop primarily carries Barred Rocks and Production Reds. He wants a paid order of 25 of the specialty breeds to even order them. I'd only take three. Guess I'll be figuring that out later this year, since I really want at least one Black Copper Maran in the flock. The Barred Rocks will be a close enough swap for the Silver Laced Wyandotte I wanted, to big deal there. Otherwise, I'm game for whatever else comes up.

I know you got a chick already but who can stop at 3? ...the feedbarn got Cuckoo Marans and Blue Cochins in last friday, i have 7 total and they are really healthy have had no issues over the past week, they are with 10 of my home hatched chicks and all are doing really well. I have had good luck with the feedbarn and chicks over the past year no issues, cant say the same about pruitts or the feedstore in Surprise on Thunderbird (sorry cant remember the name). Petfood Depot on Carefree Hwy and 7th St had chicks in but they didn't know what they where when I asked. I believe it was barred rocks and RIR, they also had Royal Palm Turkeys and Ducks all of them where mixed together in a brooder and didnt have enough heat so where huddled in one spot as close to the light as they could get (Poor things!) I would be interested in splitting an order of SLW eggs with someone, I can even incubate and hatch them. If you call the feedbarn they usually keep a steady stream of day old chicks coming in and I find have the most selection or rare breeds there number is (623) 582-1147. Pruitts does get some bantem chicks and usually have Cochins but the last few times I was in there I saw dead chicks in the brooders and that is just awful so I have decided not to support them.

i think i have a problem with a crazy hen. she is 9 months old, from months 3-7 she lived at a friends house and was laying eggs. i havent seen an egg from her at my house. (thats another issue) for unrelated reasons i took the 2 big roosters out of the pen and now she is with a cockerel and 9 other hens. about 2 days ago she started getting pretty vocal, i thought maybe she was taking the alpha chicken position and "crowing". today i noticed her sound was changing. its less of a honk and more of a bleet, i started to watch her and noticed that she is mumbling to herself a lot, making small noises and then all of a sudden, completely unplanned she hiccups this crazy bleet sound. i'm starting to think its not on purpose. its dark and she's in bed now and still about every 20 minutes she bleeeets. what can cause this? has anyone heard of it? is she sick or just crazy? any info is greatly appreciated. thanks

I agree, I would not put honey on it or mess with it besides making sure it stays clean
