Arizona Chickens

I know you got a chick already but who can stop at 3? ...the feedbarn got Cuckoo Marans and Blue Cochins in last friday, i have 7 total and they are really healthy have had no issues over the past week, they are with 10 of my home hatched chicks and all are doing really well. I have had good luck with the feedbarn and chicks over the past year no issues, cant say the same about pruitts or the feedstore in Surprise on Thunderbird (sorry cant remember the name). Petfood Depot on Carefree Hwy and 7th St had chicks in but they didn't know what they where when I asked. I believe it was barred rocks and RIR, they also had Royal Palm Turkeys and Ducks all of them where mixed together in a brooder and didnt have enough heat so where huddled in one spot as close to the light as they could get (Poor things!) I would be interested in splitting an order of SLW eggs with someone, I can even incubate and hatch them. If you call the feedbarn they usually keep a steady stream of day old chicks coming in and I find have the most selection or rare breeds there number is (623) 582-1147. Pruitts does get some bantem chicks and usually have Cochins but the last few times I was in there I saw dead chicks in the brooders and that is just awful so I have decided not to support them.

LoL. Yes, my wife is already partaking in chicken math. She's promised Jed, the young boy that is currently in the hospital, that she'll take him down and let him choose a fourth chick was soon as he's out. I'm drawing the line there, for now. I haven't even been able to start the coop yet or get supplies for it. Time is a ticking and they grow up so fast.

The Stock Shop at 67th and Thunderbird Road has been excellent so far and I've been impressed with the cleanliness. The chicks always have a heat lamp on, but the large barn door is open to allow the fresh, hot air in. The chicks have plenty of running room, too. I'm not sure if that's the store on Thunderbird you were referring to, but it's not Surprise. There may very well be another one farther out.

P.S. My wife checked in using the New Member Introductions page. I already subscribed her to this thread, too, but she's been slow to get started on the Forums. Her username is CrazyChixLady.

i'm actually really freaked out right now, i havent picked her up since i dusted her last week because she isnt fond of being held. she is such a fluffy girl i had no idea she lost so much weight i would be surprised if she's even 3 pounds and i hope she makes it through the night!
sommer, if you see this she is the largest aloha i have. much bigger than nui and snickerdoodle (but no spots), i really hope i dont lose her!

It sounds like one of the respiratory diseases to me, and most are pretty bad. I would hit the mites with seven dust at this point. My guess is that the stress of all the disruption in her social situation has left her less able to fight off these things. I would also examine the entire flock this morning and isolate any others exhibiting symptoms. You could give her antibiotics, which won't cure most of the bad respiratory diseases, but might provide enough relief of secondary issues to fight back the main symptoms. Hopefully, Sonoran Silkies will see this, she's much more knowledgable than I with these things. I hope she turns around quickly.

Also, do your birds have a good dust-bathing area?

I haven't gotten chicks from stock shop but have been in and it is always clean so would have no issues buying chicks from them

The Moringa Tree is apparently the new miracle tree, having more nutritional content that a host of other regularly edible plants.  I guess it was only recently discovered to be so nutritious.  The leaves are supposed to be high in protein, vitamin a, vitamin b, vitamin c, and a host of other minerals.  There are 92 nutrients, 46 anti-oxidants, 36 anti-inflammatory elements, 18 amino acids and 9 essential amino acids.  All from the leaves.  The seeds can be eaten in place of peas or roasted to be eaten as nuts.  You can also extract the seed oil for use in foods, using the left over seed cakes for fertilizer or even purifying water.  They are looking into the possible use of the seed oil as a biofuel.  The roots can be shredded and used similar to horseradish.  They say it will grow well in the most arid, dry and sandy places known to man.  Sounds pretty darn perfect for Southern Arizona...

If it's that healthy and useful for us, it has to be great for the chickens, too.

You can read the details at Natural News, Miracle Trees, and Wikipedia of course.

Ok,
What nursery sells these trees???

I call a few with no luck..

In case not everyone has seen it, the Valley Permaculture Alliance has started taking orders for fruit trees. Ordering runs through the first week of November, tree pickup is sometime in January. Last year I got two grape vines and a female mulberry, and have been very happy with everything. The quality was very good, and the mulberry is already almost 13 feet tall. This year, I think I'm going to get my husband a plum tree and an apricot tree, as well as some pomegranates. I've given him fruit trees for Christmas for the past three years, our joke is that I give him a tree and he gives me a hole in the ground :D.

oh that made me laugh! i told my husband next time he wants to buy me something dig a hole instead, LOL. thanks!
i am interested in grape vine but the place i want them only gets about 1 hour of direct sunlight each day. (narrow area between run and patio) would this be sufficient or do they require more sun? also, on the permaculture website it has a 2 year grape vine or 1 year - sorry to ask but what does that mean?
thanks.
oh, fluffy is still with us, still honking - but i have a treatment plan, thanks for everyones help. i'll post updates
