Arizona Chickens

Hi Mikey,
I killed mine too. I tried sprouting it in a bag like was recommended. I'd like to try again and try sprouting in dirt this time.

Don't feel too bad about killing the moringas. I've been reading up on them. Most of what I'm seeing is telling me they will do well in semi-arid conditions. That means they probably prefer more humidity than we have here. They're also supposed to be sensitive to frost and freezes, which means they probably won't do well in my yard. Some folks may have the ideal spot for them. I get hard freezes here almost every winter, and they usually come on the one night when I'm not able to get back to cover plants in time. I wouldn't mind trying one, though, just to see how it does. I am curious.

Well, I'm in Phoenix so it's warmer here and mine died before they even made it outside. I think I let the sprout stay in the bag too long before putting it in dirt.
Does anyone in the East Valley of Phoenix have seeds? Otherwise, maybe I could get some from you, Gallo, next time I'm in Tucson?
I sprouted them in potting soil - did well till I overwatered or underwatered them - they're dead

Evening folks - hope to get some work on the house done this weekend.

I'd like to put up another roost in the coop - Freaky has been roosting outside on a fence (acutally the one we had inside the coop as a divider) and I know she wants a higher perch.

Good luck to the sick ones & healthy day to you all.

I'm not an expert on growing grapes, but I doubt that an hour of full sun would be enough to get a very good crop of grapes. Grapes really like full sun. I've heard that passion fruit will do well in shade, certainly the leaves and parts of the vine are in the shade on mine are growing really well. Honestly, if I had a spot that was that shady, I'd be tempted to try planting a kiwi vine.

Well tropica mango does have them..
When I emailed my questions from their
Web site.. It said east Mesa... However
I am hoping that they have one closer..
Sonora mentioned phx? I emailed the
company to find out if they have a phx
location.. They have 3-4 feet trees..
If our succeeds we will have seeds to
share..... Can't wait!!!!

Breaking Broody!

I have been busy in the garden and at work so I haven't been at the forum in a while, but I would appreciate a little bit of everyone's wisdom.

My Wyandotte has gone full blown broody, wouldn't leave the box, screaming at everyone all puffed up, etc. I currently have her in the house in a wire bottom cage, isolation. 24 hrs has passed and she is ******! Puffing, pecking, growling....totally hormonal. I empathize, lol.

How long does this take to break? When it breaks, how long until she starts to lay again? If she doesn't break, what are the odds that she would accept chicks? And..... Lol.... If she accepts chicks, what are the odds that I could get rid of young sex link ( no roosters) pullets? My flock is large enough and I don't need to give my neighbors a reason to complain.

Thanks all :D

Just wanted to say HI. I'm about 90 miles E of PHX in Globe-Miami. Currently have Buff Orpingtons, some barred rock banties and some Welsummers, along with a variety of ducks; Muscovy, Welsh Harlequin and some WH x with runners. Besides BO and the Welsummers I am looking for some variety of Marans, maybe the Black Copper, but haven't made up my mind yet. Oh yeah, almost forget, have some poults given to me with the Welsummers; the mothers were Wellies and the daddy was a randy young Ameraucana, so probably they will be olive eggers. Not every one is laying yet, either too young or molty, but I'm looking forward to a colorful egg basket.

Would like to hook up with others breeding Buffs, Welsummers and Marans here in AZ!

I'm pretty sure the Phx location no longer exists and that's why the new one popped up in east Mesa on Apache Trail. I didn't think they were to terribly priced but I guess it depends on what you are wanting. I got the pair of sweet cherry trees there for $65 and both trunks were about 1 1/2' around. Also got a Pecan tree for cheaper than the local nurseries.

In case not everyone has seen it, the Valley Permaculture Alliance has started taking orders for fruit trees. Ordering runs through the first week of November, tree pickup is sometime in January. Last year I got two grape vines and a female mulberry, and have been very happy with everything. The quality was very good, and the mulberry is already almost 13 feet tall. This year, I think I'm going to get my husband a plum tree and an apricot tree, as well as some pomegranates. I've given him fruit trees for Christmas for the past three years, our joke is that I give him a tree and he gives me a hole in the ground :D.

What was the website again? Anyone ever been to that place in Glendale, I think it's called RSI growers. Just curious before I drive all the way out there.
