Arizona Chickens

Hey everyone! I'm new to BYC and was glad to find an Arizona thread. I wish I could read this entire thread but to be honest 3000 pages is pretty intimidating! Even though this weather is perfect curl up and read weather, I thought it may be easier to ask here.

I'm trying to build up my flock a bit and would prefer to find private breeders for the birds I'm looking for. I'm really interested in any of the Marans, Aracouna/Ameracouna/Easter Eggers, and some silkies. If anyone has any or could point me towards where to find any without ordering from a large hatchery, that would be fantastic. I found a few off Craigslist but I'm sure BYC is a better resource than that. Thank you!

I don't know about city inspectors. They sent a citation to my neighbor for "weeds in the yard." They got the address wrong. His yard is pure dirt. Mine was full of foliage. When the inspector finally got the address right, he walked on my turnips and beets. He didn't know what turnips were, but he understood about beets. Wait until it warms up; I am going to plant okra.

Remember, the BTK killer was a city inspector. Always be nice to them.

Welcome!!!! There is a great bunch of peeps here. Happy that you found us.

I have 2 silkie cockerals that will be needing a forever home. They are about 4 months old or so. They came from sonoransilkies. She is a local silkie breeder and a member on here as well.

The boys on each end and their sister in the middle.

I love okra, I plant veggies in my front yard, cabbage makes a nice edge plant, alternating green and red. I am always stunned by my neighbors that have no idea what vegetables look like in the ground. We have a 6" weed thing here. My veggies were mistaken for weeds once. I think it is great that you plant veggies instead of lawn. Did you give him some turnips? Or just beets? Chives and onions grow over 6".

Mama Hen Chris your silkies a beautiful. I had planned on getting a couple of silkies, to my surprise my family wanted me to get a bird for them. My coop is full. I have plans to move out of the city and have a couple of acres when/if my mother pass away (96 and good health). I wish to stay close to her, she is my only mother, we are so lucky we still have her.
I will be getting silkies, (they produce perfect dieting eggs), a couple of goats and a guard donkey. (Donkeys hate coyotes, they will chase them down try to bit and stomp them to death, they do not know what defense is they are offense all the way.)

Thank you. They are good looking for sure. I would love to live on a larger piece of property. More chickens!!! Good to know about donkeys. My daughter has neighbors that have a donkey as coyotes run around in the neighborhood.

Good for mom. Sounds like she has a good longevity gene. Not many elderly people that age have good health. ( I work for a cemetery) My mom will be 82 and has Alzheimer's and my dad died from leukemia 11 years ago. Enjoy every minute with your mom.

It was, it belonged to a family member, I had to leave come summer so he could go sailing. I loved it. There was a love sick corker you could hear most nights. Someone practiced a clarinet every night for an hour, it was so coal, the sounds of the deep. When you wake up, get your cup of coffee, step outside and see a great blue Hebron setting on you dinghy, it is AH SOOM. We had a one eye seal, Pop Eye, that would swim silently up next to your dinghy at night when you were going or coming, then exhale, sending you three ft out of your boat. He would push himself up out of the water to see the affect he had on you. The first couple of times I screamed, then I started to expect him. He stopped startling me when I stopped reacting to him. Then there are the dolphins.
It is a different world with its own rules. Live and let live, be there for me and I will be there for you, boat people accept you for you, not your past.
As for my girls, I am ejecting them from the house pen when I finish their coop. I used to raise budgies in Minnesota, I put up 6 mil sheeting around their outside flight. I had birds that came in to eat only. The inside aviary was kept between 40 and 45 degrees in winter. If a little budgie can handle it a well feed chick should be fine.
You said you have not turned on the heat in your house yet ether? I use oil lamps, I have 5 no2 burner lamps and 5 hurricane lamps. The three table lamps take any chill out and makes my living room quite comfortable. They put out a lot of heat and lights the room nicely. The 3 are cold blast Dietz #80, I used these on the boat, no electricity or water. Hurricane lamps are so much safer then table lamps, 2 are typical table lamps, 3 of them have heavy basses and are much more stable.

What oil do you burn?? For our outdoor oil lamps we use the Citronella oil. The other oil we use is yellow and it smells funny. The clear doesn't have such a strong smell however there is still a funky smell, out on the front patio.
Also, Suggestions on location ,where you purchase your oil?
