Arizona Chickens

Or not. Either way, you all should take advantage of the GFM benefits while they last.

I came home to a hatched chick. The sizzle egg croaked, but the eggs due on the 27th are all pipping and zipping! The LF Blue Cochin extra hatched and was gooing everything up. So I snuck him out of the bator and gave him a "welcome to the world, slimey" bath.

Haha! I just named that chicken. Everyone say hello to Slimey.

Welcome Slimey!

As for the garden. It's a raised bed so I can't use my irrigation... During the extremely hot months when I don't have anything growing in it or during December and first part of January each week we dig a trench in the garden and then we bury the chicken poop with the shavings and DE in the trench. My cauliflower plants are HUGE and the cauliflowers are almost ready to harvest. I've been cutting broccoli for weeks now and sneaking peas right out of the pod. Delish.

So I got off of the mountain today, took a dip in the pool and my 15 year old who has been out riding on his bike tells me there is a huge pile of bees on the berm of our next door neighbors lawn, right next to the street. The neighbors aren't home, folks walk up and down our street all of the time. I get as close to it as I can without disturbing them and I can see it's a new swarm that has come together and they are looking for somewhere to hive I suppose. I call the police department to report them right there next to the street and the person on the phone says, "You'll have to call someone who collects bees". So I said, "What if someone get's stung?" And he says, then you call 911. I'm making all the kids stay inside. Hope the neighbors get home soon so we can tell them.

Gretchen, how many chicks did you get from my eggs???

gckiddhouse, can't wait to see the pics... how many did you get from my eggs? 2 W/BW and 5 EEs?

I started today collecting my W/BW eggs for me. I will set them on the 2nd. I'm suppose to be getting eggs from 3 sources plus my own so I'm hoping for a huge hatch of W/BW Ameraucanas around the 25th of April. I have two hens who just got out of molt and their eggs are nice and blue, the other three who started out real blue are just a very pale blue at present... I guess that's how it goes with the laying cycles, but the genes are still there!

They could just be migrating. I they will move on tomorrow morning. We see the "hive clumps" come through my neighborhood twice a year. Once it was right above the neighbor's pool. It looked "loose" because it would sway in the breeze. But, they were gone the next day.

By migrating, I mean moving out of the old queen's territory. Which is what you said.

OMG I need some sleep.

I went outside to close everyone in for the night and realized how much the chickens divide themselves into cliques at night. They're not like this at all during the day so I think it's kinda funny.

They're so rude... I swear I taught them better than that!! So embarrassing...

I'm REALLY struggling with my nest box concept becoming a tangible plan that can be successfully executed... Anyone want to just come over and do it for me?

I have a 2nd broody now. I decided to give Midnight a few babies to raise (she's been sitting on eggs and/or golfballs for 10-12 days now). I bought 6 frizzles from the Stock Shop, already 1 week old, but after spending the night under mama they have all bonded beautifully. This picture was taken tonight after they spent all day together (the rest of the chicks are underneath her). I'm planning to give the Trader Joes eggs to Lacy if any of them hatch.

Here's Midnight with her new babies:

Here's Lacy - a bit grumpy cause she has no babies yet:

The bees will move on their own I think, like Laree said. Happens to the lake next to us.

Cluckin your coop is so cute. Haha. I love seeing a full coop. <3 What are you trying to achieve with the nest boxes?

ArizonaDesertChicks your broodies are so fluffy. What lucky girls to have a grandma go get them babies. Haha.

As I was putting the wheel barrel away from moving the rocks thinking, " I need to put out a dish with water and ice in it for the chickens", I realized I am chicken slave.

Anything at this point. SRSLY though - I would really like to have them on the outside... to maximize the amount of space there is inside. I think I'm overthinking it and it's stressing me out.

the blue LF cochin that hatched this afternoon just croaked! WHAT THE HECKINIMICHRISMAS?!!

I am so freaking done hatching. I had hope my egg killing days were over...for about 2 seconds then it was snatched away! That little chick yelled all thoughout dinner. I found it just a min ago. Hadn't even gotten stiff yet.

Someone told me the other day (they saw it on the news or something) that we are bound to see a lot more bees this year. We have had them fly over the house in a swarm and sound like a low flying jet! Be careful out there!!
