Arizona Chickens

city farm, can you post pics of the incubator you have, or describe it?

if there isnt a turner sometimes it is easier to cut down egg cartons to hold eggs instead of making paper towel shells.

and i highly suggest an acu-rite hygrometer, you can find those at walmart for around $10. they tell you the temp and humidity for the last 24 hours.

hardest part is to NOT open the incubator all the time!

Many thanks to beehappy.

I have a VERY HAPPY broody Blue Icelandic hen with four little chicks under her. 1 Blue Am. 2 Splash Ams and a barnyard mix.  I gave them to her in the middle of the day and she took right to them.

Tonight when I checked on Ida, my other Icelandic mamma, somehow she had coaxed her little ones up onto the roost with her!  I have no idea how they flew up there.... I showed my 15 year old when he was helping me stack feed in the feed shed and he couldn't believe it either.

10 patients tomorrow morning and then an appointment with my eye doctor to get new glasses. I hope that they have the same frame style that I'm wearing now.

That's awesome! I just love broodys with their chicks. I'm glad she took them. Two of my Ameraucanas were broody for MONTHS and when I gave them chicks, they acted like I threw firecrackers at them. Then they weren't broody anymore. Good thing, too. They're the only ones that are laying right now. Buncha freeloaders...

Wow, I had absolutely no idea the post the Egg Skelter would be so popular. I'm extremely glad to hear everyone that has one loves it. Once our girls start laying, I want one, too. The problem is finding counter space for it. My kitchen just isn't as big as I need it! But then again, are they ever big enough?!?

There are some really adorable egg racks available. Here are just a few others I liked. They don't hold as many eggs, though.

Yeah opening will be one thing I will want to do.. Your set up looks better
than the one she let us use... Little giant, "still Air incubator" when I plugged it in the light turned on.. Then after a while it seemed to not work.. So
I think I will wait for a hen to go broody... They know best even when it comes to the fertile eggs.. Thank you so much for your help.. Just do have the knowledge to move forward...

Ok, so far I am not to excited to incubate eggs.. To much work.. I am thinking on waiting fo a hen to go broody..
We only have about 7 eggs that I would like.. Our Mille Fleur, she is so beautiful...
I made fried eggs fom our other hen & did see the bullseye... On all of the eggs..
Still undecided ..
What kind of incubator? It really isn't hard unless you have one of the super cheap non-insulated ones.

Quote: What do you mean "it seemed to not work"? It stopped heating/holding temperature or the light went off? Or it didn't heat enough? It may need a new wafer (inexpensive and available at most feed stores), or the thermostat may need adjusting. If the light went off, it probably thought it was at the required temperature.

Are there any breeders of SQ chickens in the tucson area?

that picture wasnt my set up, i got the pic from google, but have seen the method in one of the nyd hatches. i myself have a still air incubator and when the light goes off that just means its at the temp it has been set at, thats why a thermometer is so important, that way you can adjust the temperature. i do understand wanting to wait for a broody, it seems easier, i just never had one go broody for me this year.
whatever you choose to do keep asking your questions here and we will gladly help. i know i will try my best because when i first started with chickens this is the place i always came to and learned so much.
thanks everyone.
