Oh SS was it you who posted that Polish Rooters are "wimps" or the silkie person in Florida. Anyway i have a Bantam Polish GL Rooster who appears sort of wimpy but I think when I get him away from where he is, he will be a very nice dude. Too many roosters around his present home ! But he lives with another rooster, a blue silkie and a few bantam hens and I think when I move they might be very different in their new environment.

Wow, that's the opposite of what the people I know have said. The ones that were vaccinated for flu have said it was the worst time of their life. They all got it within a week of getting the vaccine, usually about three days later. But yes, it's all nasty stuff going on. I work in the jails and we see it come in all the time. These people look like they're on their death beds! It's gotta be rough.
exactly why I don't get vaccinated. The last tetanus shot I got gave me tetanus and that stuff really is horrible and makes you want to be dead!

I am sooooooo frustrated!!

When I ordered my batch of chicks from Ideal Poultry, I specifically asked for all hens - NO MALES, not even any to keep the others warm in transit as suggested. I was willing to take responsibility for any losses. I asked them to not throw in any extras or anything. The only straight run I ordered were 3 silkies and I knew I could get roos in there.

Well, here we are about 4 months later... our FAVORITE hen started crowing this morning. A beautiful Americauna which I was hoping to get pretty eggs from. They also DID send me an EXTRA Australorp which also turned out to be a rooster and is now crowing too. Then, next thing I know, our one and only speckled sussex they sent me is starting to crow. And from what I can tell, 2 of the silkies (the blue and red) are both roos.
Sounds like my luck. I have twenty chicks from three different breeders, Black Copper Marans. It's looking like if I'm lucky I MIGHT have 4 girls

I mean I know I said I didn't mind a few boys, because I wanted to have choices for breeders and not be stuck having to breed something bad because it was all I had but this is really ridiculous!

I got my chicks yesterday! Two Black Australorps and four Amerucaunas. Their names are...

Buffy (the worm slayer)
Aurora
Miss Kyle
Miss Jim
Ming Ming
Toff

They are all sooo cute!

Yay!  I finally got rid of both the dogs last night.  They've been up on Craig's List for about two weeks with a rehoming fee, but there were no takers.  The Shepherd decided to break out of his kennel the other day and destroy our room, so I posted in the free section that I needed them gone this weekend.  I had two contacts before the flagging police had the ad removed.  The guy that took them was extremely nice, albeit a bit slow mentally.  In my experience, though, those are the types that take the best care of animals.  He has a plot of land up at the I-17 and Loop 303 with a couple hephers, chickens and such.  He has about a dozen chickens he doesn't want, so he said he'll probably drop them off to me, since he found out I already have some.  Supposedly, they are the larger layers and he wants small bantams instead.  I'm assuming they'll be roos, so I'm guessing I'll be at a full weekend of processing here shortly, assuming they check out ok.

I don't know their condition, health or anything, so I really have to look in to the fine details of the biosecurity.  How far away from my coop do I need to keep them?  Can they share the same yard at different times of the day and be ok?  What exactly do I need to look for?  It's time to break out the DE and wood ash to make sure they get a good dust bath or three.  I much prefer taking in the day old or week old chicks versus adults.

On another positive note, though, I have a friend who is going to meet with Marcia this coming week and bring me a couple of black copper marans!  They were the first breed I really, really wanted, but they are just so much harder to get here in Phoenix.  I may have to find out about pulling off keeping a rooster and start selling the fertile eggs and/or let my wife start a hatching party.  All in all, it's been a good start to the weekend.  Last day of work today, too.

Oh, and I finally built the ramp leading in to the coop.  So now the Silkies can come and go as they please, too.  They've been jumping down to go forage, but couldn't get back in.

Happy Sunday everyone!
Wow busy weekend.. Can't wait to hear what kind of chickens he has to give you.. When we purchased our girls, we were told to keep
a separate pair of shoes when you go out to visit other chickens, & their humans.. ;)
That way you do not bring home any sickness.. Or make sure you sanitize the bottom of your shoes..
I would go out and check out his deal before accepting any on your property... Just to be on the safe side.. Free does not really mean free..
I do believe that there is a section here on BYC pertaining to what you are asking.. & in more detail.. Keep us posted...
