Arizona Chickens

So daughter and I went to the feed store this afternoon. We scored a Rhode Island Red 5week old.
I may have made a mistake though. We introduced her to the coop/run/flock at 4 pm. I haven't rigged a shade cloth yet since its only March so the late afternoon is pretty sunny in the run. She immediately ran under the coop for shade and the other chicks are acting skittish now (We just split the flock in half last night). They are 7 weeks, so only 2 week difference in age but our older girls a more than twice her size.
I coaxed them all out with some meal worms and the largest Barred Rock (possible roo) pounced on the RIR kind of hard when she came out for some treat.

Oh well, it is what it is. Trial by fire and all for the new girl in the hood. Hopefully things will work out after the first night.

Finally, all the girls have names.
The Buff Orpingtons are
Nugget
Blondie
Molly
Maggy
The Barred Rocks are
Amp
Pepper
Petunia
The Rhode Island girl is
Sasha

I still love Amp!!! Is she still the loudest?

Actually, no. She's become pretty quite. Now Molly is pretty vocal, but she likes my wife best. Pepper is very vocal and a possible roo. Sasha is quite the peeper. I think she's nervous about the new environment. She came from a pen with a couple hundred chicks at the feed store. All of them run from people like crazy. She'll have to adjust to the small flock life and learn to interact with us.

Our new 3... now we have 12 in the brooder!

Australorp - "Ash"

Golden Laced Wyandotte - "Lily" (my daughter's - looks like she's dancing!)

Australorp - "Adele" (my husband's baby)
Awww. I wanted some Golden Laced and Columbian Wyandottes. Maybe the next time, after these girls are done being layers.

By the way, how many years do most hens typically lay?

People say they start slowing down after their 3rd year, but if they were bred well, and taken care of well, they can go longer. My sister has one that is 7 years old and still producing well for her. I believe in the commercial industry, they kill them after 2 years and start over.
