Arizona Chickens

Chiming in - My girls LOVE that weed as well. They also went crazy for our ruellia leaves today.
My watermelon seeds sprouted and disappeared. Have been thinning out lettuce from the garden and the
girls love the extras tossed their way.

One really annoying habit they have is kicking landscape rocks into the pool.

There is a bush near to the pool that they love to lay under. Oh well. As long as they
keep me laughing and giving us eggs, I'll put up with the rocks.

Always enjoy checking out what my fellow AZers have to add. Don't often chat with you
all though. Take care.

Sounds like "London Rocket" (Sisymbrium irio). It's a wild mustard brassica; one of the most common weeds here at this time of year, it's edible too.

You are probably referring to London Rocket, one of the most common weeds in Tucson yards this time of year. It's in the mustard family. I'd take a picture for you but my chickens have eaten most of them. This site has some photos. Not the best representation of what they look like in my yard but you'll get the idea:

It's not the London Rocket, although they like those also. It grows darker green than the London. I'll try to get some pics. I've picked most of them already.

I am not positive, but I am assuming you are referring to milkweed. That was the single most common plant in my yard these last two years, but I haven't seen so much a sign of them so far. They are definitely the creme de la creme if weeds. My girls also devour watermelon like a bunch of junkies at a crack fest. I mean, there was a paper-thin skin left and that was it. I couldn't have done a better job with a potato peeler!

On a side note, the topic came up about a month ago regarding hunting dove, particularly the Euro-collared dove. I had one in my back yard today. I don't recall seeing them before, especially as large as this one was, but I may have mistaken them for pigeon from a distance in the past. Regardless, he is now residing in my front yard, courtesy of Mr. Crossman, until Monday...

In the meantime, my Black Coppers from DesertMarcy are growing very well and my Barred Rocks are on day fourteen of laying an egg each. Batman, on the other hand, laid four straight and is out for the last three. Still, though, she hasn't fully settled in yet.

Night everyone. Work comes really early at my house!

Speaking of watermelon. I gave them a slice last weekend and yeah, down to the skin.

One of our flocks favorite & nutritious treat this time of year..
I had mentioned a few weeks ago how I have been going to different neighbors to get their weeds.
They are still pilling in from the whole neighborhood... I will take them as long as they don't spray
a chemical on them..

Since it's the start of my weekend, I'm enjoying a bunch of tasty homebrew and I'm going all funk and soul on the stereo. James Brown, Curtis Mayfield, Parliament, The Dramatics....
