Arizona Chickens

So I just heard today that Chandler, AZ is going to vote on keeping chickens. Tomorrow is the zoning meeting. Please anyone that can make it, come! :) http://www.phoenixpermaculture.org/...end-the-city-code-to-allow?xg_source=activity

Here's the draft: http://www.chandleraz.gov/content/ChandlerUrbanChickensCodeAmendDRAFT4_8_13.pdf

Please spread the word!!! I don't want to be an outlaw anymore!!!

Try to say no to that face!!!

That really surprises me about Chandler. I live in NW Phoenix in a community with HOA and we are permitted some chickens as backyard pets so long as they are not a nuisance to your neighbors. My neighbors whining/barking dogs are more of a nuisance than our chickens. There are also stipulations regarding the type of housing the "fowl" can live in, again so as not to
offend the neighbors. (I'm joining in the semi outlaw dept - shhh don't tell anyone. I have 4 meaties that are not pets

I culled Button this morning. She looked pretty bad last night and very lethargic this morning. She could barely stand. I did it before I woke my daughter. I'll tell her tonight. She'll probably be ****** at me because she didn't get to say goodbye.
I am so sorry to hear about button. She had a great life with your family.

HI! I am looking forward to meeting you when I drive down to Tucson to pick up some art work. Do you have any with patina? Are all of them signed? Just because I am on BYC I do not expect a discount in price for you work.

Seriously it is very nice.

I could pee on them for some patina, but these are personal, I'll be keeping them.

I joined the Arizona Backyard Farmer on facebook a while ago. 2 weeks ago this guy had an emergency situation. His broody hen was out off the nest and apparently the rooster tried to mate with her and broke her neck. She died almost instantly. He needed someone close that may have an incubator or a broody. My Silkie gal had just gone broody again. I volunteered my gal and there are 5 more eggs to go. What fun!!!
Wow - that is quite a situation to be in. Glad you were able to help. Poor hen...

No sign of digging. The way I buried the hardware cloth and lined the whole outside with cinder block, digging could be quite a chore. I have some 4x8 sheets of laser drops from a local fab company. If I cut them on half lengthwise I could "armor" the bottom 2' of the entire run.
Hmmm
I would have definitely buried hardware cloth, but I ended up not doing it because nothing will have a chance to dig with our dogs in the yard. And yes, our dogs would eat the chickens if they had the chance, but they don't dig or try to get into the run.

We finally gave in at 10pm last night and put the AC on for the first time this year. I suppose you're right, summer is upon us.
We had our vent going all night last night for the first time and hooked up the swamp cooler this afternoon - of course it's going to cool off again now.

So sorry to hear that - at least you tried everything you could. She just might have had more going on than we could see.

sorry to read about button. i hope your daughter understands, its a good lesson in empathy.
i think a chickens gizzard will destroy a pearl, you wont see that thing again. i am often wrong tho, happy sifting,

does anyone know if mint and strawberries will grow in our clay? i have a few flower beds that are mostly clay with amended soil and compost, i finally planted the strawberries yesterday and they already look like they've taken off. but i havent had much luck growing anything but tomatoes out here.
also, i filled the pond to the very top yesterday and today it was almost 3 inches low. i was shocked so much evaporated so quickly. last year i only filled it every 5 days or so. we redid the pond this year, made it deeper with a smaller perimeter so less surface area but it looks like i might have to refill every 2 days now.

* sigh, i am supposed to be cleaning out my bedroom as we have new furniture being delivered (finally a bedroom set, first one in my life!!) but i spent the last hour reading BYC.
night all

We've had very good luck with strawberries here. Never tried mint. Warning though, once you've tasted one from your garden you'll never be able to eat a store bought again.

well, it was nice "knowing" all of you. i am probably about to get myself banned for something that someone else did and i spoke up about.

BUYER BEWARE is the motto around here, punish the innocent, let the crooks keep on. Go ahead, take my money. Thief!

Early this morning, I moved the chicks from inside the house to the small coop on my back porch, for those of you who know my setup. I had cleaned it all out and put clean bedding in it. The food was put in to the feed hopper and everyone took to that immediately. I left the last of the medicated water in there so they could finish it off, too. I was going to refill it and run one more day of it, but instead, the chicks found the watering nipples and have taken a strong preference to those. I hadn't even shown them how to use them yet! So now, the regular waterer has sat completely untouched from the looks of it. It definitely makes my life easier, but that was quite unexpected.

I managed to finish plumbing in the nipple system for the new coop today. I didn't finish any of the other stuff, like center of the roof or the door, but it's functional for now. I'll have to make progress with that next week. The water was the most important part. I let them free-range this afternoon and had to put every last one of them back inside tonight. Batman laid an egg in the nesting box, but decided that wasn't the place to roost, I guess. The three Black Coppers and New Hampshires kept going up the ramp trying to fly through the door. Boy, I wish I had video of that! Maybe tomorrow...

MadBaggins: Those laser drops are gorgeous. I'm going to have to find out where to get some in town. Lady Kota is mighty lucky to be getting those from you, and I'm sure she'll put them to good use. I am anxious to see those photos now!

Oh, and day two of not losing any more chicks. Hopefully, we're done with that phase of the problems and everything gets better from here!
