Arizona Chickens

I moved my brew cart to the patio so I could let the girls free range while I brew.

Awesome. :)

Chickeneggineer--Thank you.  How many chickens do you have?  I'm starting out with some quail because it is on a smaller scale.  Once I get past the learning curve, I may graduate to chickens.  That is, if my HOA permits them.  Having some difficulty finding out about my HOA's CC&R's.

Any suggestions for chicken breeds that do well here in Maricopa?

Jack

We have silkies, speckled Sussex, lakenvelder, light brahma, black copper Marans & many more.. If you go to a hatchery web site
they will let you know what is heat tolerant, egg color, good layers & what not...
Enjoy

I like using meyer hatchery's site for researching that information. They have good pictures showing what the chickens will look like when older.

I love the eye candy if the chickens, and their individual personalitys. Right now I have 8, will expand by 4 or 5 in a few months. With my little flock I see it compares nicely to any social group. The Alfa leader, the clown, the very friendly, bully, that girl the bully can't bully, (& all the other trates), and the crowd the followers. They do not have that outstanding personality, but are nessaessary in any group of more then 4 or 5. Vony started out Alfa, she is now the lowest on the order, but is turning into the most affectionate, enjoying being held. Blondie, has discovered she is a heavy wieght, not any smarter, but demands "get out of my way". Whinny is now getting confidence and more a joiner, she has started laying again yesterday. Clare, she is still the investigator, found the kitchen window and likes to look in and watch me. My pure little Ernie is now being left alone. Has not been attracted for weeks by Lucy or Picker.
:D They make me so happy. They are so worth the expense of a nice coop, a safe pen, and lots of treats.

Jack - We live in a HOA community in North Phoenix. Our CC&R's are posted on the HOA's website. Found what I needed there. Maybe yours will be posted too.
We currently have Rhode Island Red, Black Australorp (mix) and Easter Egger. The RIR is more vocal than the others and also doesn't mind being handled by our 6 yo grandson. (me, she poops on

) The Australorp is my favorite for personality and egg laying is most consistent. Our EE is a late bloomer and more stand offish but fun to watch. She is also the first one to show heat distress. She is the most bold. Today she scared the @#$% out of me by jumping/flying up at the kitchen window and squawking. Not sure if she was chasing something or trying to get my attention. They all crack me up. This is our first go around with backyard chickens. This forum has a wealth of information. Welcome and Best of luck.

I agree, I use also cackle and YouTub have been very helpful. But for standards I look to see if what I am looking at is from. England has a higher level of chicken fanciers. They have always had backyard chickens. I know we will some day surpass them in eye candy. :fl

Ok you Silkie people, how big were your first eggs and how big are they now they your girls have been laying for awhile. We had a 32 gram egg today with a thin shell and it was laid in the nesting box like normal. It's the cream color that my New Hampshires (13 weeks), my wife's Splash Silkie (28 weeks) and my Barred Rocks (34 and 36 weeks) would lay. It was about half the size of my Rocks' regular eggs and I think it's too early for the New Hampshires. Any ideas? They've been getting their regular amount of feed and always have free-choice calcium available, so I don't think anything is wrong from that aspect.

Yes, I can do the food coloring thing on my four suspects for tomorrow's eggs, but I was curious for an answer sooner than that. I only have three eggs so far, so there's still a chance of getting a fourth if it is a new layer. It's exciting and nerve racking...

SOOOOOO GREAT NEWS!!! I found my little Japanese! She has 9 eggs under her and literally dug herself a burrow. It amazing. And i have 5 new silkies, two whites, a buff, and two blacks! Plus a new Ameraucana!
