:) I have to come see your little peeps

Over the course of the laying cycle I notice slight variations in color and shape. But i can usually tell which egg was made by which hen. But I have worked to get a variety of colors.
Fabulous colors.. The only way I will be able to get another hen is ....if we have to many roosters.. We are at ten weeks now.. Still not sure?? I removed 5 eggs from under Loraine the other day.. Some of the other hens must of went and layed.. She had 12 under her yesterday.. We do have free month old chicks for anyone who would like them.. Our friend that went to Mexico while we were out of town.. They only go once a month.. They can have our next batch... But, .... ??? We could put olive eggs under her?? We are on day 2... Anyone have fertile olive eggs?? Just a thought?? PM us..

It is my experience that EEs have a hard time in the heat. Others have said the same thing. An EE was the only one I lost to heat and I have almost lost a couple other EEs. All my other chickens seem to do alright. I wasn't going to get any more EEs but I love the blue/green eggs. :)
Well... that's not good news either way, slow on the eggs and not tolerant to heat. Thanks for the heads up so I can keep a close eye on her. We've been pretty diligent on trying to keep them cool during this heat. Crossing our fingers.

so it seems I need to go buy some padlocks for my pens today. when you all of a sudden you have mystery deaths of a few animals, then discover in the morning the gate is open to the pen(a few times) it is no longer a mystery of what happened to your animals. some people are just sick and cruel and absolute cowards.
Pastrymama - That's so sad. I'm sorry someone has to be soo cruel. Makes me mad!! Hope you are able to figure it out and let the police take care of it. If you have video the police will handle it.

The big problem with EEs is that since they are a mixed breed its difficult to say how they will lay and how they will handle heat. I have 2 EEs that both handle the heat just fine, and are great layers. One of the is almost 4 years old and still lays 3-4 eggs a week, when she's laying. She lays for 2 weeks, freeloads for 2, then starts laying again. She's also one of the few who will lay in the hottest part of the summer. The other is not quite a year, and although she's started to slow down because of the heat, has been laying 5-6 eggs a week since she started laying, and her OE daughter was doing just as well. She then went broody and hasn't started laying again.
