City Farm, Sorry about your dog. I have lost so many dogs in the past and everyone takes a bit of heart with me. But you will see him again. Just think of him playing now at the Rainbow Bridge in a wonderful grassy field full of doggy friends.

Haha. Thanks for the reply. I guess the human analogy doesn't make sense to me cuz when my wife goes broody, she doesn't strap on a belly suit and or start breast feeding stranger's babies. At least not yet, but she is still young.
Quote: always spelled with an "s" at the end. He has one marans hen; she has a flock of marans. I've heard it pronounced different ways (along with the names of quite a few other breeds). I figure I'm an Arizonan originally a Texan, so my accent is OK--even if it isn't an actual French accent. As long as no one is saying moron, I figure its all good.

Sounds like a typical piggy piggy Marans to me. She has just stuffed herselfOkay new development in my marans. Her crop isn't squishy. It is rock hard. It feels like a gizzard. But can't feel a gizzard, can i?
Quote:Umm... no. It's Marans with an "s" whether you have one bird or several.
Now that I think about it, the confusion may be due to pronunciation versus spelling. It is spelled with an "s" at all times: Marans. I am not sure how it is supposed to be pronounced but I suspect the "s" is silent, so it would probably be pronounced "Maran" (with a French flourish, kinda gargling the "r" and softening out the "n".) A silent "s" would account for much of the spelling confusion.
Be forewarned that my pronunciation theory may be a bunch of hot air. I took several years of French classes and then messed it all up by taking Spanish. Now I can't speak either language correctly!![]()
You are correct, the "s" is silent when singular. The guy who introduced me to the breed declared it should be pronounced moo-ron' with accent on the second syllable. I have heard a lot of people including a judge call them mare'-in with accent on the first syllable. Guess we need someone fluent in French. I never took French. Now that I think about it, the confusion may be due to pronunciation versus spelling. It is spelled with an "s" at all times: Marans.
