Arizona Chickens

What inspector?
I was just up the road from you at Thomas and 62nd. Had a addition being worked on where we did the underground yesterday. I had to plug up the city connection and the homeowners current plumbing so I could fill the pipes in between. So the homeowner couldn't use their drains until I pulled the test. City inspector was suppose to be there between 7 and 7:30 because of the special circumstances. Home owner was getting feisty.

They all started panting a lot so I brought them back inside. Please let it cool off a tad so I can enjoy them while they still fit in the cage!

I have used a shallow pan of water and let them walk in it which cools them down. People will caution you to put pebbles in so they do not "drown" but I think that the danger of drowning passes after they are a few weeks old. But you never know ! Anyway the shallow pan of water has worked for my birds.

Our Silkie drown in our pool at two months old. Everyone else has been smart enough to avoid if. Natural selection at it's best.

My chickens have gone all summer and never learned to wade in the water. The turkeys, on the other hand, had that down the first day.

Sorry to hear about your silkie. None of my girls have gotten near the pool. We use a dish bucket as their water bowl and my BSL always used to stand on the edge and balance as she drank. About a month ago she decided to start standing in it. The water comes up to her belly. I think she likes it cooling her off but she makes the water dirty for the other girls.

Oh, that was the beginning of the year, so it's long past. Not a huge issue, since we barely had her a week. There was no big sentamentals.

The only way to keep water clean is by using a closed system with nipples. And even then it needs to be cleaned out occasionally. If you add a small amount of apple cider vinegar the solution keeps clean longer. My birds were habituated to drinking from nipples but when I added the shallow pan for cooling they adjusted to drinking dirty water.
In fact when I dump the water out to rinse the container, they usually drink the water from the ground. But I keep cleaning the container and they just do their thing. Whatever !

Yeah I am home all day so I just change the water a couple times a day. I used to put cider vinegar in it to prevent any slime but it's too expensive when I dump it out twice a day and wipe it out anyway. I've contemplated fermenting my own but not sure I want to deal with it. I have thought about getting a nipple system but it seems unnecessary for 4 chickens when I can just dump the water. If I get some more birds I'll probably make a nipple system and start using the vinegar again. Since their run is sand when Ony decides to get in the bucket the sand usually just sinks to the bottom and the water stays pretty clear.

City Inspectors are never on time, they know they have the power and you have to wait for them and there is nothing you can do. I worked on a project wre the inspector was a day late +, we figured in 4 or 5 hrs but not until late the next day. You know what that does for coordinating contractors. :he Do not miss that part of the job.
