Well eggs can still carry disease but frankly yes it is safer when factoring parasites and what not.

RRR- there are very, very few diseases which can be transferred via the egg. It is more likely a person who touched the egg was contaminated, but since most of the eggs are "in the chute" for ~7 days they are pretty safe. Once the shell is on the egg, it is fairly impervious.

I live in a ruralish area north of Phx and I would not trust chicken wire at all for protection of my birds! We have had both bobcats and coyotes take our birds. A 6' fence is a breeze for both to jump up on and they will. I have personally seen a coyote jump over my fence at the one place that it is actually closer to 7' tall as though it wasn't even there! Remember they often hunt in packs! Do not underestimate a hungry predator!

Can't wait to see pics of the digs!

I almost fell asleep trying to get caught up reading on this page.

So happy that the baby was born healthy Kat. Congrats.

Ended up with 39 chicks.

10 have white chick down throughout so I'm guessing those are BW or splash wheaten.

They are gorgeous. But they were expensive! $4.75 a chick + electricity

But with all of these, I wlll soon be able to hatch all my own.

The chicks from Wi are easy to tell. They are GIGANTIC and most are Wheatens

Good night, I gotta hit that submit button down there before I fall over.

Well Mahonri at least you got 39

Very happy you got at least that many

I know you wished for more, but 39 still isn't too bad

its a little over 50% and from the incubation stories i have been reading lately that's not horrible. The horrible ones are the no hatches!! Or the ones were a few hatch with major issues and die shortly thereafter.

Have a good night.

I heard from Tonopah Pati. She has been sick for a month and is very weak.

That was all she said before signing off.

NEW CHICKS: On getting new chicks for my flock, I think we have made a decision (my mother is my chicken partner).

Thank you to all of you for suggestions and letting me know what you had available. I especially appreciated the PM from Triple T letting me know they have Cinnamon Queens available and the PM from cluckin_crazy with a tip on a lady who hatches sex-links in Gilbert and the note from Monhonri about breeds that have layed well for him..

Bobbie in Gilbert is hatching sex-links this weekend, and since I wanted brand new babies to give to my broody hen, I am planning to go that route. Shocker...I think I rather than getting matching hens like we did last time (all BA's), this time we are going to get one of each of each sex link color: red, black and gold. It will be a big change to be able to tell them apart easily! I think we will also get some "packing peanut" roosters too keep the 3 girl babies company during the raising process.

Last night we moved Broody Squiggles from the up in the air nest box to a dog carrier on the ground under the orange tree. She is setting on 2 ceramic eggs and 3 golf balls. She seemed content with the change until she got up and got confused and went back to the up in the air nest box. I moved her and she stayed put on the eggs in the carrier, so I think she is ok with it, just used to going into the coop where the regular nest boxes are. My nest boxes are very small and I don't want chicks falling out and getting hurt. Also, my irrigation comes Sunday so I need to be able to mover her/them off the ground for a few hours. The dog carrier will enable that easily. I hope soon to report that we have the brand new babies and that she has accepted them and is being a good mama. I choose her because sheis the most protective broody.

Hoping all goes well, as she has only been broody for a week or so. We are very excited!
