Arizona Chickens

This is probably well known in the canning world, but I just read it last weekend--when looking for a pressure cooker for canning, be sure to buy one made for canning. Apparently the regular pressure cookers have thinner walls and aren't suitable for canning. I have a regular pressure cooker (love it), too bad I can't use it to can some of my meat sauces.

I have my oyster shell in a ceramic cat bowl. It sits right next to my PVC food container, they seem to leave it alone for the most part. My cats have new bowls, and the old one works really well. :D

Hmm, well, unfortunately I do have a dog bowl in newly non-use status.

That might work, except...don't the chickens kick all sorts of stuff into the bowl? Some days their fermented feed bowl is so covered by sand and shavings I can't find the dish.

Look what i found!!! Was so surprised!

But they were hidden from me. How long can they stay good for left outside in the nest they made? No direct sun, it's been less than 100 degrees lately. Hasn't been longer than 3 days. Still good to eat?

Ahhhhh!!! Couldn't be happier!!!

...What do you all think of BO's? I know they have a very sweet nature but are prone to getting broody. They are also on the large side and my coop will be just big enough for 4 girls. I also know that larger birds have a harder time in the heat, but BO's are supposed to be somewhat heat hardy, and they have a fluffier build so their feathers are not so close to their body??(something like that! LOL) Pratts did not say which type of Wyandottes they are expecting. I would imagine it would be a variety of colors. I like both the silver and gold laced. How are they as layers? We are stopping by there on Friday and hopefully they will have the shipment in by the time we get there. What would you think of getting 2 BO's and 2 of the dottes? Will the BO's bully the smaller gals? Thoughts on getting RIR's that are already 3 weeks old? But then I wouldn't have the pleasure of cuddling tiny chicks!! ...

Kristine

Hi Kristine - I have had my 3 girls for almost one year now. I got two from Pratts and they were almost 2 & 3 weeks old. They didn't have any RIR so I went to another store for that one. It was a day or 2 old. I was concerned about the newbie with the 2 older chicks but they all managed just fine. I was told the max age difference when putting chicks together should be no more than 3 weeks. I actually didn't handle them much for a few weeks until the RIR got a little larger.(I don't know what would have happened if the RIR was the older one) My story has a happy ending. The 3 week old was a BO. They all did great through the summer. We didn't take any major measures. Just frozen water bottles in their waterer and near the nest box. Also frozen watermelon as often as possible and extra water. The one that had the hardest time was my olive egger. But so far, they made it through their first summer. We are relieved. The BO has not gone broody yet. She acted one time like she was starting to, but I kept taking her out of the nest box and within 2 days she was back to herself. The BO is our friendliest bird. She actually jumps into my lap when i sit outside and she thinks I have a treat for her. She's gone pretty quickly when she realizes I won't share my breakfast or coffee with her.

Have fun with whatever you get.

Congrats on your lovely eggs. You got more eggs in one day than I have gotten in 5 months from our olive egger. She's interesting. One egg a month whether we want it or not. My whole reason for getting her was for the excitement of colored eggs. Oh well. It's still nice to get that surprise every once in a while.

kpgoldstar Very nice beet yield. I like pickled beets also. Hardboiled eggs added for the springtime meals need to be used soon after cooking. I do understand that you were just telling your story. And I was telling my frustration at restarting my garden here in N Az after having been in So Cal for five years. What a difference !

Thanks for all of the pressure cooking info. I've looked on the internet and will also shop in regular stores and thrift stores. I have avery nice bread machine @ $4 from a thrift store.

Great to hear all is well.. What are you brewing this week?
I have ingredients for a hefewiezen and a specialty dark, belgian style. Not this week though. I'm heading up the mountain for a backpack on Saturday morning. I need a night by a fire with some whiskey and a cigar and no city noise. It's my bday present to myself. Ima be 43 on Monday.
You're welcome to join me. Be at my house saturday morning and be prepared to pack in about 5 miles.
