Arizona Chickens

Happy Sunday everyone! Things are going well here, my husband is continuing to improve, and the baby is eating, sleeping and fouling a huge number of diapers.

Thanks to Cheerfulheart, I got to go to the grocery store yesterday and stock up, it was really great to meet her, I just wish we'd had more time to hang out and talk chickens.

Cheerfulheart-Any word on the chicks?

Nessa, I have fertile eggs, but I am not that close to you. My hens lay eight or nine eggs a day, and they are getting way ahead of us. The rooster is a Rhode Island Red, and the hens are Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks and I also have one Brown Leghorn. She is my only white egg layer.

The RR by BR cross comes out black with tinges of gold, but the males always seem to have a white spot on the top of their head, so they are sex linked. You can either dispose of the little roosters right away or feed them up for meat birds.

The RR x Brown Leghorn produces a good looking chicken, but I don't know much about them after they have grown up. We gave all of them away.

If you are interested, PM me and I will give you my address and you can come pick up the eggs. I don't drive any more. I give the eggs away because I don't believe in charging for things.

Well, I am not afraid of political stuff. I have lived in Arizona almost my whole life, and I have never seen anyone deported that had not committed some crime.

If they were to send everyone back, the whole neighborhood would be a ghost town. It is just a lot of political posturing by some blow hard from Mesa.

The Governor should have just ignored the bill and it would have died from a pocket veto on Monday. But in a big game of chicken, she flinched and signed it. All of those protesters showed up at the capitol and forced her hand; she had to do something.

My money says nobody gets sent home; es puro pedo.

AZKat - Nice to meet you too. I was a bit out of it by the time I saw your chickens and forgot to fuss over them. I have been thinkiig about them though. You have an amazing variety and a very interesting flock! And your kids were all cute - big ones and newborn. The chicks weren't hatched yet on Sat. My mother will go and get them tomorrow. (Sabbath today so letting us and her rest/worship.)

Monhonri - her rooster that she got from you is quite a looker so far.

Shaun - no ideas on jersys'

Monhonri - I need to learn a few things from you on gardening. Congrats' on a crew of teenagers!

Laree - the ad was gone by the time I tried to check it. I assume she said something negative about her experience buying chickens from you. That just amazes me as I see you doing so many kindnesses for both the chickens and for people. I can't imagine someone reporting negatively about dealing with you.

Thank you all for keeping the political discussion civil. I know emotions are high on both sides of the issues. It is tough.

My broody hen is doing her thing. I have her in a dog carrier and she seems happy in it. But she does get up once a day and after that ends back up in her old nest box. She stays in the dog carrier after I move her back though. Can I lock her and the babies in the dog carrier for a few days with a daily break of course while the babies grow a little? Will the other hens pick on the babies?

Actually, the ad was fine. I emailed her and she said Shanks was getting picked on by her head roo. Poor roo can't catch a break. I was just worried there was something wrong with them. I knew Goldie was NOT a CM, and told her they weren't laying yet--so I didn't know how dark the eggs would be. I didn't want her to think I had mis-represented them. Anywhoo- she said a nice family took them all as a group.

ETA: Other than the distressing lack of poop board (grr...) What is wrong with this picture?

Vicky, one of the barred rocks is bleeding a little. I saw a quarter size glop of blood in the run and found her to be the culprit. She has what looks like a blood blister on the inside of her knee and she is pecking at it a little. She seems mostly ok, maybe a little lethargic compared to the others and see is staying to her self bit although see is the loner of the bunch. After diner I may try to dress it but I'm worried that anything I put on it she'll (or worse the rest of them) will peck at.

One of my Barred Rocks likes to lay by the roost as well, and finding a egg on the poop board is kinda gross. None of the others like the nest box either, but they all lay in a nest they made in one corner of the coop.

Cheerfulheart: Don't worry about it, I was pretty tired myself

Good luck with the chicks, I hope your broody takes to them.

I used sand and they loved it. It doesn't hurt if they eat it and they can dust bathe all they want. Problem solved. The poo dries out quick too.

GOOD MORNING ARIZONA!

Have a good one folks, I'll be at the DMV today. How wonderful right? At least I made Bacon.

Oh wait, I forgot to mention one of my female dogs busted past the fence and KILLED everything that was growing in the garden.

True dat.

Good morning everyone! The DH made great progress on the chicken run yesterday---until he got distracted and ended up plumbing in water to the coop/run.
hu.gif
I was inside doing home-makery stuff and I see him all but passed out in the yard. Turns out he had to get out the pickaxe to bust through...but he finished, and even installed an auto-waterer

What a great DH! I am going to copy gckiddhouse's (?) bucket design to prevent the roosting poopage.

Home-makery stuff: worked in the garden, re-seeded the yard, made noodles & bread, cleanedcleanedcleaned, played with children, made yogurt, washed the dogs, brushed the dogs, cleaned up at least 2 Fry's bags of dog hair from said washing and brushing...and on.

I put the finished yogurt in the fridge today (I just innoculate a gallon of milk and "cook" it in the crockpot) but apparently the DH was REALLY sleepy from all that work. This morning he poured himself a big cup of steamy *blubblub* yogurt--and then freaked out a little

Silly husband! That yogurt is for the chickens!
