Arizona Chickens

Wow, you aren't kidding. I just looked up a pic of a show quality BWA rooster and he really is a dead ringer! I doubt he would breed true, but he sure is pretty. Do you remember if he likely came from an EE egg or a W/BWA egg. Do you think he is really an EE? Maybe he is one of your purebreds? Now I feel even worse about not keeping him.
I woudn't be surprised if those hackle feathers are still baby feathers and end up being replaced. Do you want me to hang on to him a while and post pics in a few weeks?

He really does look better than the best Blue Wheaten that I saved out of that hatch... and bigger!

But, because of the black hackles, I'm thinking his mamma was a regular Blue Ameraucana

Well, you are welcome to him! Just say the word! I will drive him right over!

Yikes! Well at least you discovered them early before they spread to all your birds. We've never had leg mites here (or any mites, thanks to the DE), but I've heard if you rub vaseline on the chickens' legs it will smother them. After reading that thread someone posted, it does seem a little more complicated than just using the vaseline. I'm glad you caught it early.

So i have covered both of their legs with a cheap cooking spray.

I can say that i may be lucky in the fact that those birds haven't slept in the coop yet. They wanted to sleep in a plastic bin i have in the cage and I let them. So i guess that's a plus??

If I spread DE all over the floor of the cage will that help prevent anyone else from getting it? Or should i spray everyone's legs with cooking spray just to be sure?

I also read that some people were using WD-40 is that really ok?? I ask because i have a ton of it but i was confused if that was really ok.

Sorry if these are dumb questions I must learn somehow and i value all or your opinions.

Thank you for your help.

Shaun

I love your dog! Beautiful.

Based only on their coloring and without seeing their combs, I would guess they are pullets, but I'm finding these ameraucana mixes, versus hatchery EEs, a lot harder to sex.

I don't think I would be interested in them once they are full grown. If the owner would let you sell them now, I would take them and would pay well for them, but not later. Wonder why they don't want to sell them now. Will they get more for them as adult birds? Oh well, I still would love to see them. Bummer, cause I believe they are of similar age as my chicks and they would integrate well. I should have bought them when I saw them. Darn

Yes the owner thinks that they will be able to sell for more if the owner waits. I tend to think more like you and not like the owner

I was looking scaly leg mites up online. Are you sure your chicks have it? I thought you only had chicks and the pics always show older chickens with the rough legs. Can you post a pic? Try this link for info:

and some pics:

I have my guess - it will be fun to see if I'm right in a few months. - You are able to tell later, aren't you?

Let us know which ones are in your "thinning" pile. I would love to have a few polish and they are the same age as my chicks, so they would be able to integrate. Will buy them from you.

I will be doing some coop rearrainging tomorrow and if I can identify my roosters (I want to keep atleast 1 roo of each breed) then I can start thinning out. About 10 Silver laced (two sexed as roos but not certain which two) and about 15 black and whites (About 50/50 in gender some pullets are starting to get the rounded crest) are ready to go now. My son wanted to show the silver laced at the Sept 4H show but decided he is more of a buff laced instead. Since he doesnt have a desire to show the SLP, I wont be keeping any of them. I also have a mostly black polish. I am unsure of the gender on it. I also have a hand full of White crested Blue Polish roosters. Some are not as blue as others (some took on a light, almost white color and have very little blueing). They are all quite friendly, the younger ones more so because I have lived in the coop since I ordered the big order of chicks back in March.

I would be interested in the laced Polish that were born in March. One of each would be great! It sounds like you just have the silver available, but I would be interested in the other laced ones if you have them available. Do you have pics of the chicks? I'm interested! Also interested in meeting another homeschooling mama!

I've always thought you could fix any thing with duct tape or wd-40, but it might have limits.

No your wrong there. Duct tape fixes everything except ducts.
