Yes the owner thinks that they will be able to sell for more if the owner waits. I tend to think more like you and not like the owner

I have my guess - it will be fun to see if I'm right in a few months. - You are able to tell later, aren't you?

Yes as soon as I know they are for sale I will be right here letting everyone know it.

Blues blacks and some splash. Most are Sizzles. A few are standard silkies and a few are smoothe silkies. At least that's what i was told. Most are very beautiful birds.

A few that were "freebies" are not so good looking but they were breeding females and quite a few feathers from their backs were ripped out. They are the leg mite birds (should have known a freebie is a problem bird) and i feel really dumb for not knowing it was an issue. I saw their feet looked funny but thought it was because the birds were older.

ohh well, you live and you learn and I have learned TON this week!!!

The interesting thing is since they are smaller than the regular pullets i have, it has been actually good for the pecking order. They basically just laid down the law from minute one and almost all the pecking order squabbles have stopped for now? Not sure why but it has been nice

I would really love some polish for sure

. I love blue and buff a black white would be cool also. I like them all I'm not going to lie

I guess i will just start having to oil/grease up their legs/feet monthly from now on as a preventative. That sounds like a good idea! Just standard crisco? That would probably be cheaper than the pam but definitely more work.

Dumb question alert:
Is this greasing down of the legs a problem for feather legged breeds, does that cause them any issues? Just wondering.

Thanks everyone for the advice. It really helps me a ton!!

Shaun I went back in this thread to the post where you posted your flicker link for images of your birds. I didn't see scaly mite on any of those birds unless it is the feather footed ones. You do know that silkies have 5 toes right?

Yep just grease them up. I grease my silkies. Im just careful not to break any feathers off when I grease them. I go against the grain, if that makes sense so that it can get into all the nooks and cranies on their legs and I grease up about 1/4 inch into their drumsticks area (guess thats what it would be called). We have loose dirt in our coop area and they get dirty. But then again when its hot, I go out there and hose half of each coop down and they go roll around in the mud and look quite impressed with themselves when they are done. Being that you do have mites, it might need to be done more frequently. I'd also clean out the bins they are sleeping in too regularly.

Yup i know they have 5 toes and yea they are feather footed. They aren't in those pictures. These two birds are kinda ugly right now so i have not taken any pictures of them.

These two do have the scaly leg mites for sure and from the pictures i have seen they are pretty bad. Pretty deformed and look like they are caked in a white hard material. From the reading i have done that is mite poop? But Since its not insurmountable i just have a few more things to do every day and we will get these chickens back to normal soon

I feel a lot better after knowing I am not totally screwed. I will coat everyone legs tomorrow just to be on the safe side and we will go from there.

Hopefully it will only affect these two birds.

Thanks again everyone

SO another newbie question. With Leg mites on those two birds If i grease everyone else down and clean the hell out of everything am i ok to trade or give other people chickens and am I ok to get new chickens. If not now how long should I wait? The idea of these mites is new to me.

Any other suggestions for the other birds? I do have DE spread around. Should i do it REALLY heavily or are we too late for that?

Did i mention that where those two sleep is different from where everyone else sleeps? They are sleeping in a large rubbermaid plastic bin with no bedding it it. (i put it there for the wind and sun protection not for sleeping lol) I was going to get some bedding for them soon. Cleaning that out will take 5 minutes with some bleach and water.

OK thanks for letting me ask the newbie questions.

Here's a thread for you. I think the OP may be here in AZ. Thinks rattlesnakes are killing her chickens! https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=335199

Funny that you bring this up. About a week ago my son and I were in the coop and we have two roosters in brooders because they dont get along with anyone and we were changing waters before we went to bed and my son opened a brooder door that is face level and was surprised by a black and white stripped snake (we have lots of snakes out here) I think its a king snake. The worst part was that this snake climbed wood that was about 3 feet high to get in the coop then climbed in to the top brooder which is 4+ feet off the ground and was in the brooder with a rooster. The brooder is inside where I keep the smallest chicks who were bite sized compared to this snake. I was glad that the snake was removed from my coop before it had a chance to dine on anyone.

Not sure of the consensus in the this AZ group, but on BYC in general many folks strongly recommend a 30 day quarantine of any new birds you are adding to your flock.

Does anyone have banty old english game birds. In a few months my nephew wants to get some for 4h. He lives in heber/overgard so cold is an issue....though part of me is still confused about how anywhere in Arizona can qualify as cold.
